One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 8.5.26

What a wonderful week we have had! Take a look what we have been up to….

Shoe boxes

Please could we have any shoe boxes with removable lids for our DT day on Friday 15th May.

Many thanks.

Maths

This week in Year 1, we explored 3D shapes!

First, we recapped the names and properties of different 3D shapes. We talked about where we might see these shapes in everyday life. We found that a football, a marble and a bubble are all examples of spheres. We also discovered that ice cream cones and traffic cones are examples of cones. We discussed cubes, cuboids, cylinders and pyramids too. We practised recognising 3D shapes even when they were different sizes or turned in different directions. We also used the vocabulary faces, edges and vertices to describe the shapes we were exploring.

After that, we split into two groups and went on an exciting shape scavenger hunt around the school grounds. The children loved spotting real-life examples of 3D shapes in our environment and sharing their discoveries.

It was a fun and practical maths lesson that helped us see how shapes are all around us!

As an extension of our learning, we would like the children to look for examples of 3D shapes in their home or local environment. They can talk about what shapes they can see and describe them using the words faces, edges and vertices.

Next week in maths we will be looking at money!

Fact of the week

Our fact of the week this week is:

9+0=9

0+9=9

9-0=9

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Reading

Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Thematic

This week in Science, Year 1 became investigators as we explored which materials would be best for making a bath toy.

First, we tested a range of materials to find out whether they would float or sink in water. We made predictions before carefully placing each item into the water and observing what happened. We discovered that some materials floated, while others sank.

Next, we investigated which materials were waterproof and which were not. We tested different materials to see if they stayed dry or became soaked when placed in water.

After our experiments, we discussed our findings and decided which materials would be most suitable for making a bath toy. We learned that a good bath toy needs to float and be waterproof.

The children showed fantastic curiosity, teamwork, and scientific thinking throughout the investigation!

Today in history, we had great fun exploring toys from the past. We looked at toys that our grandparents, or people of a similar age, would have played with when they were children. We explored photographs, played with some traditional toys, and used books to help us learn more about them.

We talked about what the toys were used for and compared them to the toys we enjoy playing with today. The children enjoyed spotting the differences between toys from the past and present, and learning how childhood has changed over time.

It was a wonderful hands-on history lesson, and the children loved discovering toys from long ago, thank you for all your wonderful pictures.

Love to Learn

This week for Love to Learn, we would love the children to continue to practise their special friends, Fred Talk, say the word. For example,

1st tap – Sh and ar (say the special friends).

2nd tap sh – ar- k (say the individual sounds to support blending)

3rd tap shark (say the word).

1st tap – shake head as there are no special friends (see if there are any special friends, these include chatty friends too).

2nd tap s-p-l-e-g (say the individual sounds)

3rd tap spleg (say the word).

Please find attached a list of words for you to use if you wish.

Show and Tell

A reminder that children should not be bringing any toys into school as these can get easily broken or lost. If children would like to do show and tell, please email a picture of the show and tell to class teacher(s) and we can use this when the children share with the class. Please could all parents ensure that children are not bringing toys etc in from home.

Additional Information

PE is now on a Monday afternoon please can children wear a plain white t-shirt, or our new Chilton PE t-shirts, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.

Read at 3! This is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for the full 15 minutes. This will happen every Friday there after this term.

Spare clothes for year 1

We kindly ask that all Year 1 children have a spare set of clothes in school, including underwear and socks, in case of accidents or spills during the day. Having these items available helps us ensure your child stays comfortable and can quickly return to their learning.

If you have any spare underwear or clothing at home that your child has outgrown and you would be happy to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. These donations are very helpful for supporting all children when needed.

Thank you for your continued support.
