Chilton’s Super Seven Wildlife Warriors

A group of children are behind a project to support and nurture wildlife in the grounds of Chilton primary in Ramsgate.
The magnificent seven pupils from Year 4 and Year 5 pledged to do more to help nature following the school’s recent bronze honour in the Wilder Kent awards.
The young fund raisers approached Head of School Alex McAuley with their idea. Mr McAuley explained: “They came to me passionately wanting to improve the wildlife opportunities around our school grounds.
“It was entirely their idea — including the idea to raise money themselves. Their independently created and confidently delivered vide that was posted on social media to help make everyone aware a fundraising event.”
The team successfully proposed a cake sale – the group set up their stalls after school and displayed donations of tasty treats which were popular with pupils, staff, families and friends.
Chilton also sanctioned a non-uniform day to help support the cause, with total profits from the initiative totalling £600.
The children plan to spend money on bat boxes and hedgehog boxes to be strategically places around the school, as well as providing planters to grow wild flowers to attract important insects.
Mr McAuley added: “Their enthusiasm, dedication and confidence was incredible. Huge praise goes to them as well as thanks to the wonderful support they received for this excellent environmental project.
“I am certain this will not be the last you hear from these inspirational young ladies.”
Chilton Primary is actively involved in a range of eco-support projects all year round. These include establishing 'No Mow' zones around school, where grass was allowed to grow to encourage wildlife activities; ensuring learning takes place outside as well as inside school to make the most of its outdoor experience; establishing a range of bird boxes around the site, maintained over winter months ready for nesting come spring; installing minibeast homes around the school; having a space on site where children can grow food.
Other important wildlife-friendly and environmental activities are taking part in projects such as the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch; encouraging children and staff to turn off electrical equipment when not in use; making the most of the local area to support learning with visits to local beaches and nature reserves; and taking part in local litter picks.
Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors in Broadstairs and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
