One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 15.5.2026

We have had another wonderful week of learning and play!

Love to learn challenge: May Half Term

Our next topic will be ‘Dinosaurs’. We would like you to create something, either a piece of art, fact sheet or a model of a dinosaur. During our next topic, we will learn all about dinosaurs; the food they ate, where they lived, names of the different dinosaurs etc.

Please return your Love to Learn work by Wednesday 10th June.  Your child will then be able to share their work with their friends in class.

Eco Ambassadors

We have an opportunity to form a group of Eco Ambassadors. If children would like to put themselves forward, they need to write a letter to Miss Isaac (or draw a picture) explaining how they think we can help look after our environment. The deadline for this is Wednesday 20th May.

RWI

It has been wonderful to see how engaged and enthusiastic the children are about their learning! The end goal for our Reception class is to help them become speedy readers, and we are making fantastic progress. A key aspect of this journey involves the strategy of ‘Fred Talking’. This technique allows children to sound out unfamiliar words, breaking them down into smaller, manageable parts.

As children become more confident and start recognising words, we encourage them to transition to 'Fred in your head', which is a silent way of using Fred Talking in their minds. This stage acts as a bridge to achieving fluent reading, enabling them to read more swiftly and with greater comprehension.

We kindly ask for your continued support at home by encouraging your child to read daily. Sharing stories or playing with words at home not only reinforces what they learn in school but also fosters a love of reading that will benefit them throughout their education.

Maths

This week, we have been learning to take away (subtract). We started the week by understanding what this concept means: that we start with an amount, we take some away and we are left with a different amount. We used teddy bears and other classroom resources to understand this. We then learned about the – and = symbols and how this can tell us how many to take away in a calculation. We had a go at solving some subtraction calculations e.g. 5 – 3 =

Towards the end of the week, we drew jottings to represent a subtraction calculation e.g. in 5-3, we drew 5 dots, crossed out 3 of them to find that the answer is 2 as we had 2 dots left.

At the end of the week, we were thinking about our number bonds to 10.

Next week we will be learning about repeating patterns.

Thematic

This week, we have been reading The Seed is Sleepy. Through this, we learned about how a seed grows. We went around the school looking for plants and flowers, observed the changes to the seeds we put in different conditions in the classroom and used this to discuss what seeds need in order to grow.

We learned about the artist Andy Goldsworthy and created our own sculptures from natural materials.
