One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 15/5/26

What another fantastic week it has been in Year 2! Even though it has flown by, the children have packed so much into their learning and have impressed us every single day with their positivity, perseverance and brilliant behaviour. The classrooms have been full of energy, curiosity and teamwork, and it has been wonderful to see the children challenging themselves, supporting one another and taking such pride in all that they do. We are incredibly proud of their continued enthusiasm and the excellent effort they bring to every lesson!

English

This week in English, we have been exploring our exciting new book, The Lonely Beast. The children have loved discovering the story, discussing the characters and making predictions about what might happen next. There have been lots of thoughtful conversations and some wonderful ideas shared during our lessons.

As part of our learning, we have been focusing on using expanded noun phrases to add detail and description to our writing. We have also been practising conjunctions to join ideas together and make our sentences more interesting. The children have shown fantastic imagination and creativity while exploring the book and developing their writing skills.

Reading

Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.

Maths

In Maths, we have been tackling a range of problems involving mass. The children have been working hard to read and understand different word problems, using their reasoning skills to decide what information is important and how to solve each challenge.

We have been using all four operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — to help solve the problems. The children have shown great determination and resilience when explaining their thinking and choosing the correct operation to use. It has been fantastic to see their confidence growing as they apply their maths skills in different ways.

Thematic

In Thematic, we have been exploring different ways to join materials together in preparation for making our puppets next week. The children have enjoyed investigating a range of techniques, including stapling, glueing, pinning, stitching and using Blu Tack, while thinking carefully about which method works best for different materials.

There has been lots of excitement and creativity during these lessons as the children tested out their ideas and developed their practical skills. They worked brilliantly together, showing patience and perseverance while learning new techniques, and are already looking forward to creating their puppets next week!
