Weekly News 22.05.26

What a busy final week of our penultimate term! From Vikings Games to CATS tests to the Be Here, Be You, Belong parade we’ve packed a lot in on top of our learning! Let’s have a look at what we’ve been up to.
English
This week, we finished reading Street Child by Berlie Doherty, which saw Jim Jarvis — a real boy from Victorian London — finally find a home with Dr Thomas Barnardo. After witnessing the terrible conditions street children lived in, Barnardo founded a charity in 1866 to help children and families in need — a charity that is still supporting people today.
This week, we have been learning about the charity and how it has changed since the 1800s before writing our own reports about it. In our writing, we focused on using a range of conjunctions and varying our sentence structures to keep our readers engaged. We also worked hard on organising our paragraphs carefully so that information was presented as clearly as possible.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been learning about percentages. As percentages appear all around us in everyday life, we began exploring the maths behind them. The children learnt that percent means “parts out of 100” and practised converting fractions with denominators of 10 or 100 into percentages. We also converted decimals into percentages and discussed where we might encounter these in the real world.
Events
We have also had a very busy start to the week, beginning with the Viking Games on Monday. Thankfully, we were blessed with mostly good weather as we travelled to Upton to join schools from across the trust for a day of activities and teamwork.
Although spending the day away from close friends can sometimes feel a little daunting, it was a fantastic opportunity for the children to meet new people and challenge themselves socially as well as physically. We had a brilliant day packed with fun activities — and the children were especially impressed by Upton’s enormous playground at lunchtime!
