One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 5.6.2026

We have had another wonderful week of learning and play! The children have come back at the start of Term 6 full of fun and positivity. It is going to be a great final term in Reception!

Love to learn challenge: May Half Term

Our next topic will be ‘Dinosaurs’. We would like you to create something, either a piece of art, fact sheet or a model of a dinosaur. During our next topic, we will learn all about dinosaurs; the food they ate, where they lived, names of the different dinosaurs etc.

Please return your Love to Learn work by Wednesday 10th June.  Your child will then be able to share their work with their friends in class.

RWI

It has been wonderful to see how engaged and enthusiastic the children are about their learning! The end goal for our Reception class is to help them become speedy readers, and we are making fantastic progress. A key aspect of this journey involves the strategy of ‘Fred Talking’. This technique allows children to sound out unfamiliar words, breaking them down into smaller, manageable parts.

As children become more confident and start recognising words, we encourage them to transition to 'Fred in your head', which is a silent way of using Fred Talking in their minds. This stage acts as a bridge to achieving fluent reading, enabling them to read more swiftly and with greater comprehension.

We kindly ask for your continued support at home by encouraging your child to read daily. Sharing stories or playing with words at home not only reinforces what they learn in school but also fosters a love of reading that will benefit them throughout their education.

Maths

This week, we have been learning to compare quantities up to 10 using the vocabulary: ‘more than’, ‘greater than’, ‘less than’, ‘fewer’, ‘the same as’, ‘equal to’. We have been doing this using different classroom resources. We have also been using our estimating skills to say how many objects we think there are e.g. how many sweets in a jar. We got so good at this by the end of the week!

Next week we will be learning our number bonds. By the end of the year, we should know all number bonds for the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (e.g. the number bonds for 5 are 0+5, 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 4+1 and 5+0). We should also know some of the number bonds for numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

PSHE

This week, the whole school have been completing PSHE activities in afternoon lessons focusing on healthy relationships. In Reception, we have been learning about kind and unkind words and the impact these can have on others. As part of this learning we discussed, explored and performed the following poem:

“The Tiny Scratch” Author anon

A scratch upon your knee may heal,

A bump can go away,

But mean words sometimes leave a mark

That stays the whole long day.

So think before you speak aloud,

Be gentle, kind, and true,

Because the words you say to friends

Can stick like glue.

Next week, we will be developing our science skills. We will be exploring and using magnets, pipettes, and exploring what happens when we put celery in water which has food colouring in.

We will also start our new topic: Dinosaurs! We will find ways to release dinosaurs trapped in ice and learn about fossils and palaeontologists.
