One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 5/6/26

We hope everyone had a lovely half-term break and enjoyed some time to relax and recharge. It is hard to believe that we are beginning our final term in Year 2!

This week, we have been settling back into our routines and reflecting on all the wonderful learning that has taken place this year. The children have returned with positive attitudes and enthusiasm, ready for the exciting weeks ahead.

Maths

This week in Maths, we have continued to develop our understanding of time by learning to tell the time to 5-minute intervals on an analogue clock. We began by revisiting our prior knowledge of o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, using these key times to help us identify and calculate other times around the clock face.

The children explored how the minute hand moves around the clock in steps of 5 minutes and practised counting in fives to support their learning. Through a range of practical activities, partner discussions and reasoning challenges, they learnt to read and write times accurately using both analogue clocks and time vocabulary.

We have been encouraging the children to explain their thinking, using mathematical language such as 'minutes past' and 'minutes to', and to identify patterns on the clock face. It has been wonderful to see the children's confidence grow as they apply their existing knowledge to work out less familiar times. Their resilience and enthusiasm have been evident throughout the week, and they are becoming much more fluent in reading the clock independently.

English

This week in English, we have begun exploring our new class text, Grace and Family. The children enjoyed being introduced to the story and making predictions about the characters, setting and events that may unfold throughout the book.

To help us become familiar with the text, we have focused on describing different settings from the story, experimenting with both past and present tense to consider how language can change depending on the purpose of our writing. We have also explored the use of rhetorical questions, discussing how authors use them to engage the reader and encourage them to think more deeply about a character's experiences and emotions.

Throughout the week, the children took part in discussions, shared their ideas confidently and used evidence from the text to support their thinking. These activities have helped us develop a deeper understanding of the story so far and will provide a strong foundation for our writing as we continue our journey through Grace and Family over the coming weeks.

Reading

Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.

PSHE

This week in PSHE, we have been exploring the power of words and the impact they can have on others. The children discussed how words can sometimes hurt people's feelings and how unkind language can affect someone's emotions and wellbeing.

We also focused on the positive ways we can use our words to make others feel valued and included. Through class discussions and activities, the children practised giving genuine compliments and considered how kind words can boost someone's confidence and brighten their day. We reflected on the importance of thinking before we speak and choosing words that are respectful, encouraging and supportive.

The children showed great maturity when sharing their ideas and experiences, demonstrating a growing understanding of how their words and actions can affect those around them. This learning has encouraged us all to be more mindful communicators and to use our words to spread kindness within our classroom and wider school community.

Home Learning

For home learning this week we would like you to create a fact file about Africa to support our learning and our new book which is set in The Gambia!
