5.6.26 Weekly News!

It has been another busy and productive week in Year 4, with lots of exciting learning taking place across the curriculum.
English
This week, we began our new class text, I Was a Rat!. The children have thoroughly enjoyed being introduced to the story and its interesting characters. We have focused on writing dialogue between characters, ensuring that speech is punctuated accurately using inverted commas and other appropriate punctuation. The children have also worked hard to improve their writing by using a range of verbs and adverbs instead of repeatedly using the word said. This has helped to make their dialogue more engaging and descriptive.
Maths
In maths, we started the week by solving two-step word problems using bar models to help us identify the important information and plan our calculations. The children then moved on to converting units of measure. We practised converting between metres and centimetres, litres and millilitres, and kilograms and grams. The children showed great perseverance when applying their understanding to a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities.
PSHE
In PSHE, we focused on the impact that unkind words can have on others. We discussed how words can affect people's feelings and self-esteem, even when they are not intended to be hurtful. The children explored the importance of offering sincere apologies when mistakes are made, while also recognising that although saying sorry is important, the effects of unkind words may not be forgotten straight away. This led to some thoughtful discussions about kindness, empathy and treating others with respect.
Spellings
Words ending in ing.
Travelling, cancelling, beginning, forgetting, skipping, knitting, dragging, giggling, staring, swinging.
Love to learn
Using the skills we have learnt this week, we would like you to write your own story which includes dialogue. In can be about a topic of your choice it just needs to include speech. Don’t forget your inverted commas, punctuation before the closing inverted comma and use ambitious speech verbs and adverbs.
