Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News –01.06.26

Term 6 has started and we have hit the ground running. This week we have really enjoyed starting our new text in English, developing our knowledge of subtraction in Maths and completing our PSHE learning ‘words can hurt’.

Just a little reminder, please ensure that children have a water bottle and a labelled hat and rain coat in school everyday.

Maths

This week in Maths, we have been learning about missing number problems. We used what we already know to help us find the missing numbers. We have also been using the bar model to help us subtract. First, we used it to show “taking away” one set. Then, we used it to compare two sets and find the difference. We also deepened our understanding by explaining how we found our answers.

Next week in Maths, we will be learning about tenths. We will learn that tenths are made when something is split into ten equal parts. We will also learn how to count up and down in tenths. We will then look at what happens to digits when we multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. This will help us understand place value even more.

English

This week in English, we have started reading our new text, The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. We have been writing a setting description and thinking carefully about the vocabulary we choose. We focused on using exciting verbs and adverbs to make our writing more interesting for the reader.

Next week in English, we will be focusing on using conjunctions. We will learn how conjunctions can help us join our ideas together and make our sentences more detailed.

Thematic

This week, we have completed our PSHE learning for the term. We looked at the theme “Words Can Hurt” and discussed how the words we use can be like an invisible bruise. Even though we cannot always see the pain they cause, unkind words can still hurt others. We also talked about how saying sorry and using kind words can be like fixing a broken bridge, helping to make things better.

Next week, we will have our Science Day on Monday, the theme this year is 'Hands on, Brains on, Get Curious'. We will be completing a variety of experiments to help us answer scientific questions. We will also be using a range of scientific equipment to support our learning. Later in the week, we will begin our new Thematic learning for the term, Rainforests. We will be learning to identify the different layers of the rainforest and exploring the different biomes around the world.
