This week in English, we have been watching an animated short film called The Piano. We have only been watching small snippets at a time, as our focus has been on developing our emotive language and creating powerful imagery in our writing. Rather than simply making a point and moving on, the children have been learning how to build upon and develop their descriptions so that the reader can really feel the emotions being conveyed.
This is a sophisticated writing skill that will serve the children well as they prepare for the challenges of Year 6, and we have been genuinely amazed by the quality of the work they have produced. The children have shown great imagination and care in crafting their writing.
Next week, we will continue to develop our use of emotive language while also learning how to manipulate tenses as we practise writing flashbacks.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been converting between fractions, decimals and percentages. We have focused particularly on common fractions, aiming to become familiar enough with them that we can recognise them quickly in a variety of contexts. For example, the children have learnt that 75% is equivalent to 3/4, and that 1/5 is equivalent to 0.2.
Developing this fluency will help the children tackle more complex mathematical problems with greater confidence.
Next week, we will be working with rectilinear shapes and using our knowledge to solve some challenging problems.
PSHE
This week in PSHE, we have been discussing the lasting impact that words can have on people. We explored how unkind words can often stay with someone for a long time and can sometimes hurt more deeply than physical pain. Equally, we considered how kind words can have an enormously positive impact and how a simple comment or gesture can brighten someone’s day.
Next week is Science week where will be conducting some great experiments.
