What a wonderful week we have had. Take a look at what we have been up to this week…
Felderland Farm Trip
A reminder that Year 1 will be visiting Felderland Farm on Friday 26th June. We will be leaving school at 9:45am and returning by 2:30pm.
As we will be away from school during lunchtime, children will need to bring a packed lunch and a water bottle in a labelled backpack.
A reminder that Friday 26th June is also a non-school uniform day for all children in exchange for a donation towards our Summer Fair. As the trip will take place outdoors, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. If the forecast is warm and sunny, children should come to school with sun cream already applied and bring a named sunhat. If the weather is cooler or wet, please ensure your child has a waterproof coat.
We are looking forward to a fun and exciting day of learning about how the fruit grows on the farm. Thank you for your support in helping us prepare for the trip.
Show and Tell
A gentle reminder that children should not bring toys, jewellery, Pokémon cards or other personal items into school, as these can easily become lost, damaged or cause distractions during the school day.
If your child would like to share a special item during Show and Tell, please email a photograph of the item to the class teacher(s). We will be happy to display the photograph while your child talks about it with the class.
We would be grateful if all parents and carers could support us by ensuring that toys, jewellery and other personal belongings are left at home. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Maths
We have had a busy week in Maths and have been developing our understanding of grouping, sharing and problem solving.
On Monday, we practised grouping items equally and linked this to repeated subtraction using a counting stick. We carefully read each statement, counted out the correct number of counters and then grouped them equally. Next, we counted how many groups we had made and used our counting sticks to show the repeated subtraction. This helped us understand how numbers can be split into equal groups and how repeated subtraction is connected to division. We were very proud of our work!
On Thursday, we used a variety of practical resources to explore how numbers can be shared. First, we investigated numbers ending in 0, such as 40, and discovered that they can be grouped perfectly into tens with nothing left over. We then explored sharing quantities between two groups. We learnt that even numbers can be shared equally, while odd numbers always leave one left over. We enjoyed using counters, cubes and other resources to help us explain our thinking.
Later in the week, we became mathematicians and problem solvers! We investigated what happens when we add two odd numbers, two even numbers and an odd number with an even number. Before each investigation, we made predictions about what we thought would happen. We then used classroom objects and drawings to prove our ideas. We discovered some exciting patterns: two odd numbers make an even number, two even numbers make an even number, and an odd number added to an even number makes an odd number. We used our findings to make generalisations and explain our mathematical thinking clearly.
Next week in maths we will be looking at fractions . We will look at quarter of objects, shapes and quantities.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week is:
9 +1 =10
1+ 9 = 10
10 – 1 = 9
10 – 9 = 1
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read Write Inc., we have been revising the sounds we already know and learning some new sounds too. We have continued to use these sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences with increasing confidence.
A key focus has been identifying the “special friends” in words. We have practised finding the special friends first, saying the sounds and then blending them together to read the word. This strategy is helping us to become more fluent and independent readers. Any extra practice at home finding special friends, saying the sounds and reading words would be greatly appreciated.
We have also been working hard on our handwriting, taking care to form our letters correctly and neatly. In our writing, we have been practising writing complete sentences, remembering to use capital letters at the beginning and full stops at the end. We are very proud of the progress we are making in both our reading and writing skills!
Reading
Children will bring home two reading books each week: a RWI home book and a Learning Zone book (with a coloured sticker). RWI books will be changed by an adult every Monday, so please ensure all reading wallets are placed in the trays. Children should read their RWI book three times during the week to build fluency. Learning Zone books can be changed independently by the children on Tuesday–Friday mornings.
Minute Reads are also included; once completed, please ask the class teacher for a new one. Please read with your child regularly at home and sign their reading record each time. Both RWI books and Learning Zone books can be recorded in the reading record. Certificates are awarded weekly, with additional certificates for every 20 reads.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Thematic
This week in Science, we have been learning about plants and trees and developing our observation and investigation skills.
First, we explored the question: Can we use a flower to identify a plant? Using real plants, we identified and labelled the different parts of a flowering plant, including the roots, stem, leaves, flowers and seeds. We discussed the important job each part does and discovered how flowers can help us recognise and name different plants in our local environment. The children enjoyed looking closely at a variety of flowers and asking thoughtful questions about the world around them.
Next, we investigated: Are all tree trunks the same? We learnt the names and purposes of the different parts of a tree, including the trunk, branches, leaves and blossom. We carefully observed trees around our school grounds, drew and labelled diagrams, and recorded our findings using photographs. We also compared the sizes of different tree trunks by measuring them with string and discussing what we noticed.
Finally, we explored the question: Are all leaves the same? Using magnifying glasses, we examined leaves closely and observed their shapes, sizes, colours and textures. We sorted leaves into groups, recorded our observations and learnt the names of some local trees. We even challenged ourselves to identify trees using only their leaves!
The children showed fantastic curiosity and scientific thinking throughout the week, making careful observations and sharing their ideas confidently.
Next week we will be learning about deciduous and evergreen trees
Love to Learn
This week, your child will be bringing home their lines for the Year 1 assembly. We would be very grateful for your support in helping them practise these at home so that they can learn them confidently off by heart. Thank you for your continued support.
Additional Information
PE is now on a Monday afternoon please can children wear a plain white t-shirt, or our new Chilton PE t-shirts, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.
Read at 3! This is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for the full 15 minutes. This will happen every Friday there after this term.
Spare clothes for year 1
We kindly ask that all Year 1 children have a spare set of clothes in school, including underwear and socks, in case of accidents or spills during the day. Having these items available helps us ensure your child stays comfortable and can quickly return to their learning.
If you have any spare underwear or clothing at home that your child has outgrown and you would be happy to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. These donations are very helpful for supporting all children when needed.
Thank you for your continued support.
