One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 26/6/26

We have reached the end of a very hot week. With the hot temperatures we ask that children come into school everyday with a water bottle, sunhat and suncream which they can reapply at lunchtime. Thank you for your continued support.

RWI

We continue to encourage children to practise speedy reading. This is crucial in helping them build fluency and confidence in their reading abilities. At home, please continue to encourage your child to fred talk unfamiliar words in their head and to rapidly read familiar words. As their reading speed increases, we will begin to ask questions based on the texts they are reading. This will help us to develop their comprehension skills, which are essential for their overall literacy development.

In addition to reading, we are also placing a strong emphasis on letter formation. It is important that your child learns to start and finish each letter in the correct places. This skill not only aids their writing ability but also contributes to their overall presentation of work.

Maths

This week, the children have been exploring the concept of subtraction in a very hands-on and engaging manner. We learned that when we subtract, we start with a whole quantity and take away a part, which leaves us with another part. To help illustrate this idea, we used Numicon, a fantastic resource that assists in visualising numbers and their relationships to one another. The children enjoyed demonstrating how taking away one part from the whole affects the remaining amount.

Furthermore, we introduced another method of subtraction where the children crossed pictures out to visually show how many were left after taking away a part. This practical strategy enables them to develop a firmer grasp of the subtraction process and the relationship between numbers.

Next week we will be sequencing events.

Thematic

Over the past week, we have been exploring what different dinosaurs ate and how we can classify them into groups based on their diets. The children are showing great enthusiasm and curiosity as they learn about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. This has opened up wonderful discussions about the environments and habitats in which these magnificent creatures lived. They have been eager to understand how dinosaurs roamed in herds and how some were skilled hunters.

To further enhance their understanding, we took all of our knowledge and creativity to design our very own dinosaurs! The children thought carefully about the habitats their unique dinosaurs would thrive in, what they might look like, and what they would eat. It has been delightful to see their imaginations come to life, and they have given their creations some truly fun names!

Next week we will continue to learn about dinosaurs including how to look after one.
