The weather has been much more gracious this week, still marvellous, but without sending us into survival mode. As a result we have been able to get really stuck into our learning and end the year on a high! Let’s have a look at what we’ve been up to!

Last week, Team Midnight, Cobalt and Ultramarine all got together and came up with some questions for their new teacher. Take a look at the videos below:

 

English

This week in English, we have been reading The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson. This is certainly a challenging text, as it was written in 1832 and much of the language is unfamiliar to modern readers. The children have risen brilliantly to the challenge, discussing the meaning behind the poem and using context to help them understand its rich vocabulary.

In our writing, we have been weaving together the skills we have developed throughout the term. We have combined emotive language with detailed setting descriptions and figurative language to create vivid, atmospheric pieces of writing. Rather than focusing on writing lots, we have slowed down and carefully crafted each sentence, thinking about how every word choice contributes to the overall mood and imagery. It has been wonderful to see the care and attention the children have put into their writing.

 

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been learning about rotating and translating polygons. This is a topic where accuracy is key, so we have focused on working carefully and checking our methods rather than rushing to the answer.

When rotating shapes, we recapped important vocabulary such as clockwise, anti-clockwise and our knowledge that a full turn is 360°. The children learnt how to rotate shapes around a fixed point before moving on to translating shapes.

We discovered that translating shapes is not quite like translating languages! In maths, translating simply means moving a shape without changing its size, orientation or shape. The children worked hard to ensure their translations were accurate.

We also ended the week with our Money Sense Day. The children explored how different careers can lead to different salaries and discussed the many factors that influence a person's career choices. We considered that while salary is important, people are also motivated by their interests, values and the opportunity to make a positive difference.

 

Thematic

This week in Thematic learning, we finished our unit on mechanisms. The children learnt about levers and fulcrums, discovering how they make lifting heavy objects much easier. We also explored how pulleys can dramatically reduce the effort needed to lift an object and investigated gear ratios, learning how different-sized gears can be used to reduce the force required to move or lift something.

The children enjoyed seeing how these simple mechanisms are used in everyday life and were able to make excellent links between our classroom learning and the world around them.

Love to Learn:

This is our last Love to Learn of Year 5 before the you all end up at the top of the school. All the staff at Chilton are incredibly excited for our Year 5s to be the top of the school as we know you’ll set a phenomenal example to all the other year groups.

As a result, your love to learn this week is to make a poster with one of the following titles/topics:

‘What makes a great Year 6 Chilton child?’

‘My favourite school memories so far!’

‘I’m excited for…’
