Show and Tell

A gentle reminder that children should not bring toys, jewellery, Pokémon cards or other personal items into school, as these can easily become lost, damaged or cause distractions during the school day.

If your child would like to share a special item during Show and Tell, please email a photograph of the item to the class teacher(s). We will be happy to display the photograph while your child talks about it with the class.

We would be grateful if all parents and carers could support us by ensuring that toys, jewellery and other personal belongings are left at home. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.

Maths

This week in Maths, our Year 1 children have been learning all about statistics by sorting and organising information in different ways. We explored Carroll diagrams, where the children sorted objects using two different criteria, for example: Red / Not red, Has 4 legs / Does not have 4 legs.

They carefully thought about where each object belonged and explained their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary such as same, different, sort, group, criteria, yes and no.

The children also investigated Venn diagrams. They sorted objects into groups based on different features and discovered that some objects could belong to both groups because they shared more than one characteristic. This helped develop their problem-solving and reasoning skills. We were so impressed with the children's enthusiasm and confidence as they explored different ways to sort and classify objects. Well done, Year 1!

Next week in maths we will be looking at problem solving.

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read Write Inc., we have been revising the sounds we already know and learning some new sounds too. We have continued to use these sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences with increasing confidence.

A key focus has been identifying the “special friends” in words. We have practised finding the special friends first, saying the sounds and then blending them together to read the word. This strategy is helping us to become more fluent and independent readers. Any extra practice at home finding special friends, saying the sounds and reading words would be greatly appreciated.

We have also been working hard on our handwriting, taking care to form our letters correctly and neatly. In our writing, we have been practising writing complete sentences, remembering to use capital letters at the beginning and full stops at the end. We are very proud of the progress we are making in both our reading and writing skills!

Reading

Children will bring home two reading books each week: a RWI home book and a Learning Zone book (with a coloured sticker). RWI books will be changed by an adult every Monday, so please ensure all reading wallets are placed in the trays. Children should read their RWI book three times during the week to build fluency. Learning Zone books can be changed independently by the children on Tuesday–Friday mornings.

Minute Reads are also included; once completed, please ask the class teacher for a new one. Please read with your child regularly at home and sign their reading record each time. Both RWI books and Learning Zone books can be recorded in the reading record. Certificates are awarded weekly, with additional certificates for every 20 reads.

Thematic

This week in Geography, we explored the four seasons and discussed the changes that happen throughout the year, including the different types of weather and how the environment changes with each season.

The children also learned about the longest day and the shortest day of the year, thinking about how the amount of daylight changes across the seasons and how this affects our daily lives.

To finish the topic, the children took part in a fun thematic quiz, where they worked hard to recall and apply everything they have learned this term. It was wonderful to see their growing knowledge and confidence as they answered questions and shared their ideas.

We are incredibly proud of how much the children have learned this term and the enthusiasm they have shown throughout our Geography lessons. Well done, Year 1!

Love to Learn

This week for your love 2 learn we would like the children to be able to read and write the common exception words. You can show case this any way you wish.
