One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 3.7.26

We have had another wonderful week of learning and play!

Reading Records and Reading Books

We will be collecting in reading records and school reading books next Friday 10th July to allow us to sort books and pass reading records up to new teachers ready for September. Please use the Oxford Owl books (information emailed earlier this week) over the summer holidays to keep up the amazing reading at home.

RWI

It has been wonderful to see how engaged and enthusiastic the children are about their learning! The end goal for our Reception class is to help them become speedy readers, and we are making fantastic progress. A key aspect of this journey involves the strategy of ‘Fred Talking’. This technique allows children to sound out unfamiliar words, breaking them down into smaller, manageable parts.

As children become more confident and start recognising words, we encourage them to transition to 'Fred in your head', which is a silent way of using Fred Talking in their minds. This stage acts as a bridge to achieving fluent reading, enabling them to read more swiftly and with greater comprehension.

We kindly ask for your continued support at home by encouraging your child to read daily. Sharing stories or playing with words at home not only reinforces what they learn in school but also fosters a love of reading that will benefit them throughout their education.

Maths

This week, we have been learning to sequence events in the correct order. we have been putting pictures of events in the right order e.g. making a snowman, getting a drink. We then made jam sandwiches at school thinking about completing each part in the correct order. The next day we wrote the instructions using words like first, then and next. We have also been learning about time durations (e.g. what 1 second is, what 1 minute is). we did a range of different activities to experience these time durations.

Next week we will be learning about the days of the week, putting them in order and thinking about what happens on these days. We will also be asking questions about today, tomorrow and yesterday. Towards the end of the week, we will be learning about patterns, identifying these in the environment and then creating their own wallpaper with a pattern.

Thematic

We started the week by reading: Dinosaur Farm! We then discussed how we would look after a dinosaur if we were the farmer, considering where it would sleep, how it would wash, what it would eat etc. The next day, the children were given our own dinosaur to look after for a whole Power Play session considering the mentioned points. The children were amazing at looking after their dinosaurs and this was wonderful to see!

Next week, we will be reading Harry and his Bucket of Dinosaurs! We will create a new adventure for the characters in the story to go on and will be retelling the story using role play. At the end of the week, we will be taking part in a quiz to see what we have learned about dinosaurs over this term.
