What a fantastic week we have had in Year 2! The children have been working hard across all areas of the curriculum and have shown great enthusiasm, curiosity and kindness. Here is a little snapshot of what we have been learning. 

SPaG and Phonics 

This week in SPaG, we have been learning about consonants and vowels and recapping a range of sounds, including digraphs and split digraphs. 

The children have been practising spelling our common exception words: 

was, said, some, come, when, what, school, once and friend. 

We have also been learning a new spelling rule: 

The ‘-tch’ rule 

When the final ‘ch’ sound comes after a short vowel sound, it is usually spelled -tch. 

For example: 

fetch, catch, pitch, watch, dispatch 

Some children have continued to follow our Read Write Inc. programme of study, while others have been working through our English curriculum, focusing on the wonderful book Rapunzel by Bethan Woollvin. 

Maths 

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value and numbers to 100. 

We have been exploring ‘ten and some more’, building numbers using tens and ones and representing numbers to 100 in 10s and 1s. 

We have also been revisiting: 

• Equality and inequality 

• More and fewer 

• Odd and even numbers 

The children have been developing their mathematical vocabulary and explaining their thinking when comparing and representing numbers. 

Maths Homework 

The Maths homework is attached to this blog post. There is no need to print the worksheet — your child can record their answers in their Love to Learn book which has bn sent home this afternoon. 

There is a worked example at the top of the worksheet to remind the children how to approach the questions. An answer sheet has also been uploaded so that you can check the answers together. 

New reading records have also been given out today so you can record any time your child reads (they don’t have to read an entire book in one sitting, a few pages at a time is perfect.) Once they have read 20 times, they can let their teacher know and we will move their name up our reading display in the classroom.  

We are still working hard assessing the children’s reading levels using Accelerated Reader and we will let you know when these books and quizzes will be available for you to read at home. 

PSHE – Friendship, Kindness, Respect and Feelings 

Our PSHE learning this week has focused on what makes a good friend, kindness, respect, boundaries, feelings and equality. 

We talked about the qualities of a good friend, including sharing, listening, helping, taking turns, including others, using kind words, being fair, saying sorry and forgiving. 

The children explored the idea that friendships are not always easy and that we do not have to agree with our friends all the time. We discussed different situations that might make us feel angry, frustrated, disappointed or upset, and considered how we can still choose a kind response. 

We used the wonderful story Be Kind by Pat Miller to become ‘kindness detectives’, looking for the different ways that characters showed kindness. 

One of our key messages was: 

“I can feel ______ and still choose to be kind.” 

We also explored respect and personal boundaries. The children learned that a boundary is a limit about what someone feels comfortable with and that respecting others means listening when someone says “no”, giving people space and considering their feelings, choices and needs. 

Finally, we talked about feelings and equality. We recognised that everyone experiences different emotions and that there are no wrong feelings. We discussed how we are all different in our interests, personalities, talents, families, experiences and the ways we learn — and that these differences are something to celebrate. 

The children have shown some lovely understanding of how we can make our classroom a kind, respectful and inclusive place for everyone.  

We are incredibly proud of the effort the children have put into their learning this week. They have been developing their knowledge, practising important skills and, most importantly, learning how to be kind, respectful and supportive members of our school community.
