What an amazing week Year 3!  We have had a very busy week but have had so much fun!

Maths

During our Maths lessons this week, we have been building on our place value understanding to notice what changes and what doesn’t change when we count in ones, tens and hundreds from any given number.

Next week, we are comparing and ordering numbers between 1-1000. We will explore this through different manipulatives and placing them on a blank number line. We will end the week with learning to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.

This is a link for TTRS where the children can practise their times tables. The children’s log ins are stuck on the inside of their reading records. Please note, we have set their TTRS to only practise twos, fives and tens for now as this links to what we are currently practising in school.

This week we have continued exploring the story of ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ by Michelle Robinson! We explored the importance of giving clear, coherent instructions to our teachers to help them make a jam sandwich – if we weren’t clear, it all went very wrong (but it was very funny!!)

In Guided Reading, we looked at the poem ‘If I’d been born a caveman’ by Myles McLeod, where we looked at the positives and negatives of being a caveman compared to now. We had fun performing this as a Mexican wave as a class!

Next week, our English and Guided Reading lessons will move on to a new story: 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. We will be using this text to help us practise the four sentence types — statements, commands, questions and exclamations — to build a solid understanding that will support us for the rest of Year 3.

The children should now be in the flow of bringing home their reading books. In Year 3, we try to give the children more autonomy over their learning, and one way to do this is giving them the responsibility to change their own books. Children should change these first thing in the morning when they arrive at school then put them in the basket for us to check.

Thematic

What a fun start to our Thematic learning!! We've started learning about Prehistory and the Stone Age. We looked at different types of rocks and how they are formed. We also thought about how early humans might have used them for tools, weapons and shelter.

Home Learning

As part of our Thematic learning this term, we would love for you to create something at home based on your learning about rocks from this week in class. We simply want you to enjoy sharing what you have learned in a way that suits you best. We can't wait to see your fantastic rock creations! Some ideas below:

• A leaflet or poster explaining the different types of rocks and what they are used for

• A fact file all about rocks, including facts on how they are formed, what they look like, and where they might be found

• A 3D model of different rocks or rock formations, using materials such as playdough, clay, or recycled household items

• A quiz or game to test family members on what you have learned about rocks

• A short story or comic strip featuring a character who discovers different rocks

• A PowerPoint or slideshow presentation to share your rock facts, if you have access to a computer

 

As part of our ongoing work on spelling in Year 3, we have been focusing on the statutory list of Common Exception Words. These are words that often don't follow regular spelling patterns and need to be learned by sight and through regular practice.

We have sent home a list of the Year 2 words your child is currently finding tricky to spell. There is no need to complete anything on the sheet or return it to school — it is simply for your information, so you know which words to focus on together at home.

The most effective way to help your child with these words is little and often. A few minutes of practice most days will make a real difference over time. You might like to try some of the following:

• Reading the words together and spotting them in books

• Practising little and often, rather than in one long session

• Writing the words in fun ways — chalk outside, letters in sand, whiteboards, or even "rainbow writing"

• Simple games such as look-cover-write-check, or turning spellings into a quick quiz

• Using the words in short sentences together

There's no pressure for this to be formal — even a few minutes here and there really helps embed these words into your child's long-term memory.

6th October – Harvest Festival for Reception at 9am and year 3 at 2.45pm

7th October - Harvest Festival for Year 2 at 9am and year 1 at 2.45pm

8th October - Harvest Festival for Year 4 at 9am and year 5 and 6 at 2.45pm

15th October – Kent Test Results out to parents

23rd October – Halloween Disco – All children come to school in fancy dress. Year 1, 2 and 3 Disco from 2pm-3pm and year 4, 5 and 6 disco from 3.15-4.15

23rd October – Final day of term 1
