Read Write Inc

Children continued practising their speedy sounds, reading red and green words, and building fluency in their daily Read Write Inc sessions. They are becoming increasingly confident at blending, segmenting and reading with expression.

English

Our English learning this week focused on strengthening children’s understanding of verbs and adverbs, and using them to improve their sentences.

Across the week, children took part in:

• Identifying verbs in Rapunzel and spotting adverbs as a challenge.
• Using vocabulary sheets to choose accurate verbs and adverbs to describe the witch.
• Creating simple sentences and improving them by adding adverbs.
• Partner writing to rehearse and refine sentences.
• Drawing and annotating their own witch with verbs and adverbs.
• Writing a final showpiece sentence describing how their witch moves.

Children enjoyed games such as charades to act out verbs, fastest‑finger vocabulary spotting, and partner rehearsal to build confidence.

Next week we will start a new book by the same author, Little Red. We will also be celebrating Poetry Day on Thursday 1^st October.

SPaG

In SPaG, children learned how some verbs can take suffixes –ing, –ed, –er without changing the root word. They practised spelling Year 1 red words including was, said, some, come, when, what, school, once, and friend. Partner activities such as brick‑building and scrambled spelling helped reinforce accurate spelling and quick recall.

Sow and Grow – Thematic

In science, we continued our Sow and Grow unit. Children explored:

• How plants grow and what they need to survive.
• How to observe closely using simple equipment.
• How to classify plants using features.
• How botanists investigate the natural world.

Children used fieldwork skills, created simple classification groups, and continued developing their scientific vocabulary.

 

Maths

In Maths, children deepened their understanding of place value in two‑digit numbers. Using base‑10 equipment, they explored:

• Regrouping ten ones for one ten.
• Regrouping one ten back into ten ones.
• Representing numbers using proportional and non‑proportional models.
• Using money to understand tens and ones.

This foundational work supports confident number reading, writing and reasoning.

Harvest Assembly

We have been practising our Harvest songs and preparing for our upcoming assemblies. This year, we are collecting donations for Thanet Food Link. Any in‑date tinned or dried food is warmly welcomed. Donations can be sent into school between Wednesday 30th September and Monday 5th October.

All year 2 children have been given a line for our harvest assembly. We have printed these and sent them home so please practice these with your children!

Harvest Festival dates:

• 6th October – Reception (9am) and Year 3 (2.45pm)
• 7th October – Year 2 (9am) and Year 1 (2.45pm)
• 8th October – Year 4 (9am) and Year 5 & 6 (2.45pm)
