One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 21.09.2026

Another brilliant week in Year 3 – fossils, soil, bug hunts!

Maths

During our Maths lessons this week,  we have been comparing and ordering numbers between 1-1000. We explored this through different manipulatives and placing them on a blank number line. Towards the end of the week, we started learning to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.

Next week in Maths, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of magnitude of numbers and rounding. We will then begin to apply our understanding to reading scales and using appropriate units.

English

This week we started the story ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We have written a range of  brilliant sentences, using a variety of commands, statements, questions and exclamations and created a poster incorporating these with our knowledge of the Stone Age so far!

Next week, our English lessons will focus on research! We will be looking at how Stone Age people lived and creating a fact sheet by the end of the week about everything we have learnt. Within this, we will be using a range of sentence types from this week, alongside learning to use simple and compound sentences.

The children should now be in the flow of bringing home their reading books. In Year 3, we try to give the children more autonomy over their learning, and one way to do this is giving them the responsibility to change their own books. Children should change these first thing in the morning when they arrive at school then put them in the basket for us to check.

Thank you for supporting your children with reading 4 times a week at home! Please could you ensure your child’s book is in school on a Thursday as we have Mrs Kirtley in to read with the children 😊

Thematic

We have had a very practical week in Thematic! On Wednesday, we learned all about how fossils are formed and had a go at making them ourselves (unfortunately, not properly, that could take over a million years!) On Thursday, we explored soil and how it’s formed, looking at the different elements and stages that go into it. Friday, we discovered that soil is truly ‘alive’, with lots of fascinating creatures living and working beneath our feet! We carried out a Soil Ecosystem Field Survey to investigate what we had learned.

On Tuesday 29th September, we have our school trip to Pegwell Bay. We will be walking to Pegwell Bay to take part in a variety of exciting activities linked to our Thematic Learning, Prehistory Rocks. Please can children come to school wearing their PE kits, as PE will continue as normal in the afternoon. Children will also need a waterproof coat, water bottle and snack, as well as comfortable shoes or wellies, depending on the weather. We will be completing activities on the sand and stones, you may wish to send a spare pair of socks in so that children can change if they get particularly sandy shoes. We are looking forward to a fun morning of learning outdoors!

Home Learning

This week in English we have been learning about the 4 different sentence types

This week we would like you to create a fact file about your favourite animal or hobby, try and use all four sentence types.
