Learning about their wider environment came to life for young children at Chilton Primary with a visit to their local park.

It formed part of the Year 1 group’s ongoing thematic work called My Home, My Town. It gave pupils the opportunity to experience first-hand the places they have been learning about in the classroom, helping them to make meaningful connections between their studies and the world around them.

Deputy Head Teacher Hannah Cheshire explained the importance of the visit. She said: “Throughout this learning unit our children explore the concept of living memory.

“They begin by reflecting on their own lives, considering how they have changed since they were babies before comparing life today with the experiences of their parents and grandparents.

“As their learning develops, the children investigate their local area, exploring a range of maps, identifying key human features and creating maps of their own.

“They are encouraged to think carefully about what has changed over time and what has remained the same within both their homes and their town.”

During the visit to Nethercourt Park, pupils observed the local environment, identified physical and human features, discussed landmarks and considered how the park and surrounding area are used by the community.

The experience gave them a real-life context for their classroom learning, deepening their understanding of their local area while encouraging curiosity and thoughtful discussion.
