Weekly News! 2.10.26
What a wonderful week we have had in Year 1! Take a look at what we have been up to…
Maths
This week we have been learning about counting, sequencing and numbers to 10. We have practised counting forwards and backwards, including starting from different numbers, and have been developing our understanding of the number sequence.
We have also been exploring part-part-whole using practical resources such as counters, cubes, tens frames, bead strings and counting sticks. We have been learning that numbers can be split into two parts in different ways and then combined to find the whole. We have used practical resources to help us represent and explain our thinking.
We have continued to practise counting in steps of 10 and have used songs, rhymes and practical activities to support our counting skills. We have also been developing our mathematical vocabulary and explaining how we know our answers.
Read, Write Inc.
This week, we have been working incredibly hard, especially on our write abouts!
We have been using Special Friends, Fred Talk and saying the word to support our reading. We have also been practising Fred Fingers to help us segment words when spelling. The children have shown great enthusiasm when breaking words into their individual sounds and then blending them back together to read the whole word.
We have also started learning some common exception and high-frequency words. These words can be a little tricky because they cannot always be read using our usual phonic strategies, so we will be practising them regularly to help the children become confident and fluent readers and writers.
This term, we will be focusing on:
-
the
-
a
-
to
-
I
-
is
-
of
-
do
-
go
These words will be revisited regularly throughout the term, helping the children to recognise and use them confidently in both their reading and writing.
A few minutes of practice at home can make a big difference. Please continue to encourage your child to use Fred Talk when reading and Fred Fingers when spelling. Your support at home is greatly appreciated and will help your child develop confidence, fluency and independence as they continue their exciting journey into reading and writing.
Reading
Every week the children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves, first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed. We will support your children at the beginning doing this 😊
Please encourage children to place their reading folders in the trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly. Children will also get a certificate or pize for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Thematic
This week we have been learning about the past and the present and exploring how people, places and experiences can change over time.
We have been thinking about our own lives and our families, discussing how our experiences may be similar to those of our parents and grandparents, but how things have changed over time. We have explored the idea of living memory and what this means when we talk about the experiences of our grandparents. We want to say a HUGE thank you for all your support with the ‘Then and Now’ museum. The children loved exploring the past and seeing things in real life made their learning so much more meaningful! Thank you!
We have also been learning about Ramsgate Tunnels and why they are an important local place. We looked at photographs and discussed what we could see and notice, comparing what the tunnels may have been like in the past with what they are like today. We developed our oracy skills by sharing our ideas and thinking of questions we could ask about the tunnels.
On Friday, we learned about Augustus Pugin, an important person connected to our local area. We found out about his work as an architect and explored some of the buildings he designed. We discussed why some people from the past should be remembered and made links between Pugin and places we can see locally, including the Ramsgate steps.
Throughout the week, we have been developing our understanding of past, present, memories and change, while using photographs, discussion and practical activities to help us explore our local history.

Home Learning
This week, we would love for the children to develop their confidence with their maths learning. This can be displayed any way you wish!
How many ways can you make 10?
Spare clothes for year 1
We kindly ask that all Year 1 children have a spare set of clothes in school, including underwear and socks, in case of accidents or spills during the day. Having these items available helps us ensure your child stays comfortable and can quickly return to their learning.
If you have any spare underwear or clothing at home that your child has outgrown and you would be happy to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. These donations are very helpful for supporting all children when needed.
Thank you for your continued support.
Show and Tell
A gentle reminder that children should not bring toys, jewellery, Pokémon cards or other personal items into school, as these can easily become lost, damaged or cause distractions during the school day.
If your child would like to share a special item during Show and Tell, please email a photograph of the item to the class teacher(s). We will be happy to display the photograph while your child talks about it with the class.
We would be grateful if all parents and carers could support us by ensuring that toys, jewellery and other personal belongings are left at home. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
