One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 2.10.26

It has been another busy week in Reception and our wonderful children continue to shine and flourish in all of their new learning! We have loved watching their confidence grow.

There has been lots of excitement, curiosity and creativity in our classrooms this week and we have been so proud of how enthusiastically the children have joined in with everything we have been learning.

RWI

This week, we have continued our exciting journey with Read Write Inc, focusing on our Set 1 sounds. Our sounds of the week have been c, k, u and b.

During our RWI sessions, we have been placing a particular focus on oral blending. This is an important skill that helps children to hear the individual sounds in words and blend them together to work out what the word is. It is a really important step towards becoming confident readers and writers. You can have a little go at home too! Try ‘fred talking’ some words and see if your child can listen carefully and jump in to work out what you are saying!

We continue with ‘Word Time’, which is a very exciting step in our phonics journey. The children are beginning to use the sounds they have learnt to build simple words. This is helping them to understand that when we put individual sounds together, they can make a word. You can support your child at home by practising the sounds we have learnt and having a go at building simple words together. For example, can they use the sounds c, a and t to make the word cat?

Our yellow sound books will be coming home every Friday so please use these to practise our sounds together at home.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been developing our classification skills.

We have been learning that we can sort and organise objects by noticing things that are the same and things that are different. We have been exploring different collections of objects and thinking carefully about the features we can see.

We started by sorting objects into simple groups, such as boxes and not boxes, and then challenged ourselves to think of other ways we could organise the same collection.

We have also been exploring different attributes, such as colour, shape, size and what an object is used for. The children have been fantastic at spotting different features and explaining their ideas.

We even had a go at sorting objects in more than one way. We discovered that the same group of objects can be organised differently depending on what we are looking for!

Thematic

We have officially begun our exciting new topic all about Superheroes, and what a fantastic start we have had! This week, we have been focusing on the wonderful story ‘Supertato’. The children have absolutely loved getting to know Supertato and, of course, the naughty Evil Pea! We have enjoyed talking about the characters, discussing what happens in the story and thinking about what makes someone a superhero.

We then let our imaginations run wild as we invented our very own Super Veggies! The children designed their very own superhero vegetable, thinking carefully about what they would look like. They gave their Super Veggie a cool costume, came up with a superhero name and even thought about what amazing superpowers they might have!

But our superhero adventures didn't stop there...

Later in the week, we discovered that Evil Pea was on the loose!  We put on our thinking caps and worked together to invent a clever trap to catch him.

The children had to think carefully about what materials they could use, how their trap might work and where they could put it. There were lots of fantastic ideas, teamwork and problem-solving taking place.

We are very excited to continue our superhero adventures next week and find out what other trouble Evil Pea might get himself into!

Poetry Day

We have also been celebrating Poetry Day this week! We decided to take our learning outside and go on a little nature exploration. We listened carefully to the sounds around us and looked closely at the things we could see. We thought about all of the things we could hear, see and notice outside, collecting lots of lovely ideas along the way.

We then brought all of our ideas back together and used them to create our very own class poem. It was so lovely to hear the children sharing their ideas and listening to one another. We were amazed by some of the beautiful words and descriptions they came up with, and it was wonderful to see how we could take lots of individual ideas and bring them together to create something special as a class.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend. We can't wait to see all of our little superheroes back on Monday, ready for another super week!
