One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 9/10/26

Another Wonderful Week in Reception!

What another fantastic and busy week we have had in Reception! Our wonderful children continue to amaze us with their enthusiasm, creativity, and growing confidence. We have had so many lovely learning opportunities this week, and it has been wonderful watching the children flourish.

Our First Harvest Assembly

On Tuesday, we celebrated a very special milestone as our reception children took part in their very first Harvest Assembly!

We could not have been prouder of every single one of them. They sang so beautifully and showed such confidence and courage performing in front of an audience. This was the children’s first experience of taking part in a school assembly, and they were all fantastic! We would also like to say a huge thank you to all the siblings who made the assembly possible. It was great to see how enthusiastic they all were about helping their brothers and sisters.

RWI

This week, we have continued our exciting Read Write Inc journey, learning our new Set 1 sounds f, e and l.

We have also been working incredibly hard on our oral blending, using Fred Talk to help us hear individual sounds and blend them together to make words. The children are becoming much more confident at listening carefully to the sounds and jumping in with the word!

We have continued exploring Word Time, where the children are beginning to use their phonics knowledge to build and read simple words. It has been lovely watching them recognise sounds they already know and begin putting them together.

You can continue supporting your child at home by practising Fred Talk with simple words such as p-i-n, l-e-g and d-o-g. Can they listen carefully and tell you the word?

Our yellow sound books will be coming home on Friday, so please enjoy practising our sounds together over the weekend!

Maths

This week in maths, we have continued developing our sorting, organising, and comparing skills, building on all of our fantastic learning from last week.

We began by exploring collections of shells and thinking about the different ways we could organise them. The children looked carefully at their colours, shapes, sizes and patterns before deciding which shells belonged together. We discovered that the same collection could be sorted in lots of different ways!

We then introduced sorting circles, where the children explored sorting objects using two different rules. We discovered that sometimes an object could belong to both groups! For example, a shell might be spiral-shaped and stripy, meaning it belongs in the overlapping section of our circles.

Later in the week, we challenged ourselves even further by comparing the groups we had created. We introduced and practised the mathematical vocabulary more, fewer, the same and equal. The children enjoyed looking carefully at their groups and deciding which had more objects, which had fewer and whether any groups had an equal amount.

We even used ourselves to explore sorting, organising into hoops based on different features, such as who was wearing a jumper or who had brown hair!

The children have been fantastic at explaining their thinking and sharing their ideas with one another.

A little challenge for home - Can your child sort some toys, socks or other household objects into different groups? Can they tell you why they have organised them that way and which group has more or fewer?

Next week we will be starting our learning on counting.

Thematic – Supertato Adventures!

Our superhero adventures have continued this week, and the children have been absolutely loving our Supertato stories!

This week, we explored another Supertato book in the series. We enjoyed discussing what happened in the story, sharing our favourite parts and talking about the things we liked and disliked.

We then became story detectives, comparing our two Supertato stories and thinking carefully about what was the same and what was different. The children were brilliant at recognising familiar characters, including Supertato, Evil Pea and the other vegetables, whilst also noticing how the adventures and events in each story were different.

But the creativity didn't stop there!

We worked together to create our very own Supertato story using a story map. The children came up with some wonderful ideas about what adventures our familiar characters could get up to next!

We were so impressed with their imaginations and storytelling skills. It was especially lovely to see so many children independently continuing this learning during Power Play, creating their very own stories and adventures.

We certainly have some budding authors in Reception!

Next week we will continue our learning about superheroes.

Autumn Day

On Friday, we celebrated Autumn Day, and what a lovely way to finish our week!

We spent time exploring the wonderful changes happening around us as we move further into autumn. We talked about how the weather begins to change, why the leaves change colour and what happens to the trees during this season.

We looked closely at the beautiful colours of autumn, including reds, oranges, yellows and browns, before heading outside on our very own autumn colour hunt around the playground!

The children loved spotting signs of autumn in our outdoor environment and sharing all the exciting things they noticed.

We also learnt a lovely autumn leaves poem, which the children really enjoyed performing.

A Little Autumn Adventure for Home!

Today, your child will be coming home with a brown bag, ready for a very special autumn challenge!

We would love for you to enjoy an autumn walk together over the coming days and see what wonderful autumn treasures you can discover.

Perhaps you might find:

  • Colourful autumn leaves

  • Conkers

  • Pine cones

  • Acorns

  • Twigs

  • Seeds or anything else that reminds you of autumn!

Please pop your autumn treasures into your child's brown bag and bring them back into school next week.

We cannot wait to see what everyone discovers! We will be sharing our collections with the rest of the class, talking about what we have found and exploring all the different colours, shapes and textures of autumn.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend, full of autumn adventures, and we cannot wait to welcome our lovely children back on Monday for another exciting week of learning!
