Weekly blog - w.b. 12/10/26

We have had another fun filled week in year 2.
SPaG
This week, we have been learning all about compound words. The children discovered that compound words are made when two smaller words are joined together to create a new word.
We explored examples such as:
- sunflower (sun + flower)
- rainbow (rain + bow)
- football (foot + ball)
- toothbrush (tooth + brush)
- bedroom (bed + room)
The children practised spotting compound words in sentences, matching words together during a compound word scavenger hunt, and writing their own silly sentences using compound words. We were amazed by their creativity!
Alongside this, we continued practising our focus spellings: what, some, come, said, once, school, friends and other red words.
At the end of the week, the children completed a spelling quiz and reflected on their learning through "tick or fix" activities.

English
In English, we have been focusing on the book Little Red.
The children:
- Identified nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.
- Acted out the story in groups.
- Planned the story by organising it into a beginning, middle and end.
- Drew parts of the story to support their ideas.
- Practised writing in the past tense.
- Learned how to construct accurate sentences.
- Explored how different sentence openers can make writing more interesting.
Throughout the week, the children wrote each section of the story before completing a showpiece task where they created their own narrative. They worked hard to include:
- Capital letters and full stops
- Past tense verbs
- Nouns
- Adjectives
- Verbs
- Adverbs
We were especially impressed with their imaginative ideas and growing confidence as writers.

Maths
This week, we have been comparing and ordering two-digit numbers.
The children used:
- Base 10 equipment
- Hundred squares
- Number lines
- Bead strings
- Coins
to help explain their mathematical thinking.
We focused on:
- Greater than (>)
- Less than (<)
- Equal to (=)
The children compared two-digit numbers, ordered groups of numbers, and explained how the tens and ones help us decide which number is bigger or smaller.
Later in the week, we applied these comparison skills to length, mass and capacity, comparing measurements and ordering them from smallest to greatest.
The children demonstrated excellent reasoning skills and were able to justify their answers using mathematical vocabulary.
Design and Technology
Our DT learning focused on designing, making and evaluating structures.
Linked to our upcoming topic, the children explored how structures are built and what makes them strong and stable. They worked through the design process by:
- Designing their own structure.
- Selecting appropriate materials.
- Building their design.
- Evaluating what worked well and what could be improved.
The children thought carefully about which materials would make their structures sturdy and durable and showed fantastic teamwork throughout the project.

They loved sharing their Love 2 Learn houses from last week. We were absolutely blown away by their creativity!

Homework Challenge
Compound Word Hunt
Can you find 10 compound words at home, on a walk, or in a book?
Write each compound word and then split it into the two smaller words.
For example:
- playground = play + ground
- sunflower = sun + flower
Challenge: Choose three of your compound words and write a silly sentence using each one!
We can't wait to see what you discover.
Thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful weekend!
