Weekly News! 16.10.26

We have had another wonderful week in Year 5! The children continue impress us with their positive attitude towards their learning. We have been focusing on respect across the whole school and have particularly emphasising responding to adults and others when spoken to, for example saying good morning to the adults on the gate.
English
This week in English, we have finished publishing our explanation texts booklets entitled How to Live in Space. This focused on explaining how astronauts eat, sleep and use the toilet in space.
We have also started our new English unit this week focusing on extended narrative. We looked at the features (relative clauses, direct speech) and started writing our own story involving Jamie and Minty from the class text.
Next week, we will finish reading Jamie Drake Equation and finish writing our extended narrative which will involve an alternative ending to the text.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been learning to identify prime numbers (numbers with only 2 factors such as 7) and composite numbers (numbers with more than 2 factors such as 14). We then used this learning to identify prime factors of a number. At the end of the week, we used our knowledge of known facts to work out unknown facts for multiplication.
Next week, we will be learning to use different strategies to multiply and divide e.g. to work out 24x4 we can halve the 24 and double the 4 to get 12x8.
Science
In our Stargazers topic this week, we have been learning about the Apollo 11 moon landing. We learned what happened and then acted this out. we learned about who Frank Drake was. During the week, we also had the opportunity to ask scientific or historical questions based on aspects which have piqued our interest during this term.
RE
Next week, we will be focusing on RE in our afternoon lessons.
