One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 12.10.2026

Weekly News! 12.10.2026

Year 3 have genuinely blown us away with their kindness, manners and respect. We have seen  growth in their maturity and their resilience.

Maths

This week we have learned to use column addition; this is a new skill that we have picked up well. We have started to use this knowledge and applying it to regrouping in the ones.

Next week, we will be continuing to develop our column addition regrouping in the tens and the hundreds.

Times Table Rock Stars

Children should aim to play for 5-10 minutes each day, the expectation is that by the end of Year 3 children will know the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. TTRS is designed to be a fun way of practicing these times tables. It is broken down into 8 game types.

Gig – this creates a heatmap to show times tables knowledge up to 12x12

Garage – this is a teacher set times tables game. Please complete this at home.

Jamming – a game to develop times tables confidence

Studio - games the are aimed at motivating (how many can you do in a set time etc) after 10 games this will give a rock status.

Festival and Arena – you can compete against other children from other schools

Rock Slam – you can choose to challenge anyone from within the school (adults and children)

English

This week our English lessons have focussed on play scripts. We planned and wrote our own Stone Age play scripts, ensuring we included all the features, such as character list, scene descriptions, narrator, speech and stage directions! Well done Year 3!

Next week we will be doing all things poetry! The children loved the National Poetry Day so much that we thought we would dedicate a whole week to exploring, reading and writing our own poems!

Thank you for supporting your children with reading 4 times a week at home! Please ensure you have written these reads in their reading records as the children get rewards for reading more than 4 times a week!

Please could you ensure your child’s book is in school every day as we read with them throughout the week, thank you.

Quizzing on Books at Home

As a part of reading at Chilton, we use Accelerated Reader for the children to ‘quiz’ on the books they have read to ensure comprehension understanding. This is how you can do this at home:

When logging into Accelerated Reader you will need to access it by using that link below:

https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

To login, you will need to select the student option and use the login information provided. Your child's login is stuck in the front of their reading record. Once you are logged in you will have access to the Accelerated Reader website. Please see below for attachment of a detailed guide.

Thematic

In Thematic this week, we have learned about the Bronze Age Boat that was found between Dover and Folkestone in 1992. We have also completed our end of unit quiz, we have worked really hard this term and the results from our quiz have really shown that.

Next week, we will be moving onto our RE learning for the term, Hinduism. We will be learning about the events and meanings in the story of Rama and Sita, the importance of diya to Hindus and we will also be having a go at making our own Rangoli patterns.

Home Learning

For your Home Learning this week we would like you to make a poster to advertise to Year 2 what they are going to learn about the Stone Age next year.

  • Different eras of the Stone Age

  • How they lived

  • About our trip

  • Different types of rocks

  • Archaeologist
