One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 6.11.2026

Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a fabulous week last week. The children have returned to school in a very positive manner and we are looking forward to the coming term in Year 5.

Many thanks to parents who came to Parent-Teacher Consultations this week. It was lovely to see you all!

English

This week in English, we have started looking at our new text: Ice Trap. We started the week by predicting what we think the text will be about just by looking at the front cover. We created a piece of artwork for a landscape and then collected vocabulary to describe the setting. We then used these to write a setting description. In this writing, children were challenged to use ambitious adjectives and noun-phrases.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been solving problems where we need to find a starting point and where we need to work backwards. We have used rounding and our knowledge of place value to add and subtract.

Next week, we will adding and subtracting using the column method and reasoning about addition and subtraction.

Thematic

This week, we have started our new topic which is called ‘Across the Pond.’ We started the week by looking at our big question for the topic: The USA or the UK: Which country is the greatest? We discussed what we already know about North America and any links we can think of between the UK/our lives and North America. We located and labelled the countries of North America on a map.

We learned the term ‘topography’ and what features are topographical features (hills, mountains, coasts and rivers). We explored atlases and found maps that show the topographical features of North America and compared them with the UK. The children also learned what the main mountain ranges are in the UK and North America.

Spelling

Red words for this term: immediate(ly), develop, especially, equip (-ped, -ment), relevant, shoulder, average recognise, criticise, occupy, occur, profession, interfere, interrupt

Love to Learn

We would like the children to relax and enjoy their half term! Please do still read and use TTRS still.
