The children have started Term 5 with such positivity and enthusiasm towards their learning.  Please find below some new changes to the home learning for Year 6.

Please note that Year 6 PE is now on a Wednesday so all children must come into school wearing the correct PE kit.  Year 6 also take part in an extra 30 min PE session with their teachers on a Friday afternoon so they will need to wear their trainers on Fridays.

Home Learning Tasks:

1. We would like the children to learn the following spellings.  They will be tested on these next week.

2. We would also like the children to research the use of palm oil.  The children will be writing a non-chronological report next week on the impact that palm oil has on the environment. We would like the children to bring in their research – this will help them with their writing.

English:

The children have continued to read their year 6 text - Kensuke’s Kingdom.  They have used their reciprocal reading skills to predict, clarify and summarise the book.  The children have also written an emotive letter, writing in role as Michael.  On Thursday this week, the children learnt more about the history of Nagasaki in Japan and wrote a setting description of a scene from the book. 

Next week, the children will be writing a non-chronological report about palm oil.  This subject is linked to the text, Kensuke’s Kingdom.  The characters in the book find themselves on an island that suffers from deforestation. Technical language, ambitious punctuation and structure will be the children’s foci.

Maths:

We started the week teaching the children ratio and how to solve ratio and scaling problems. We then revisited our arithmetic skills focusing on fractions, long multiplication and division.

Next week the children’s learning will move on to more complex ratio problems.  We will also be sitting some SATS practice papers to familiarise the children with their SATS assessments that start on Monday 9^th May.

Afternoon lessons:

This week, the children explored our Chilton PSHE value – Be here, be you, belong.  We read the books, ‘I am not a refugee’ and ‘The Island’. We discussed the issues in the books and then discussed that we all belong and that even though we are different from each other, we must respect others’ views and ideas.  We created personal artwork that related to our own personalities.

Next week, the children will learn about Sikhism in the community.  They will learn what Sikhism is, how Sikhs worship and where, how children are welcomed into a Sikh community and the tradition of langar.
