Ancient Rome Marches Into Chilton Primary

How the Roman civilisation revolutionised Britain is a challenging look at history for children at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

The in-depth adventure into the past by Year 3 pupils included a trip to the acclaimed Canterbury Roman Museum where they studied artefacts and exhibits in the centre that is built on the site of a Roman town house.

The hands-on experience included finding out about mosaics, silverwear, jewellery, glassware and pottery as they were immersed in 2000 years of history.

The visit underpinned extensive learning as part of the year group’s thematic curriculum that began with the invasion of Britain and traced the timeline and development of the civilisation, understanding the lasting impact that can still be seen today.

As part of their studies they found out about key events during the Roman rule of Britain and plotted them chronologically, before learning about the Roman army and what life was like for a soldier.

To discover more about the reasons for the invasion and the impact on Britain, pupils re-enacted their findings. They also considered Hadrian’s Wall, why it was built and then wrote diary entries from the viewpoint of a citizen living near it.

The advent of Queen Boudicca, the inventions of the Romans and their beliefs, including the introduction of roads, public toilets and aqueducts, plus their clothes and fashion all gave a rounded picture of the civilisation’s growth.

A dressing up day as citizens, nobility and soldiers was another fun part of the Revolutionary Romans topic that also included understanding literacy and numeracy from the era.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “The trip to the Roman museum and the structured learning journey in class gave our children an important insight into one of the most influential civilisations the world has known.

“Their journey took them from the invasion of Britain in AD42 right through to the way our world today still bears examples of their conquest and development. It was a fascinating learning adventure.”
