Important Life Lessons Celebrated In Colourful Parade

Acceptance, individuality and a sense of belonging within the Chilton Primary School family have been celebrated in an energetic and colourful outdoor parade by children.

It was the culmination of a term-long learning journey for the whole school with each class highlighting specific aspects of the themed initiative called Be Here, Be You, Belong.

Head of School Alex McAuley described it as “an enthusiastic, energetic and colourful affirmation of the work that was delivered through the PSHE part of the curriculum and which touched all corners of school life.

“The parade had a lovely carnival feel to it and it was special that we had parents in to watch the procession. This is just one part of the important work that we do to build children's self-respect and self-worth with the key message of acceptance at its core and that includes respecting diversity as well.”

Each year group had a book to consider which covered the main strands of the topic and teachers based part of their learning around that text to cultivate a culture of the importance of being yourself without fear and to allow others to be themselves around you.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire added: “Relationships are fundamental to every classroom and every school. Children need to feel seen, understood and heard. This learning gave our pupils an opportunity to make their voices heard on important and far-reaching issues.

“Our year groups engaged positively with creative writing of themed stories and poems, working together to provide work for a large art display, enjoying games linked to the topic. The clear message that the individual does matter, valuing the contributions of others, and the importance of safe relationships were also part of their learning.

“Our staff has worked tirelessly and effectively to craft learning opportunities to build children’s sense of worth and self-esteem.

“This sits perfectly with an overview of our school values covered so far this year- Kindness, Equality, Courage and Respect. It also was an opportunity to reference the British values we have taught of Individual Liberty and Mutual respect.”

*Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education focuses on strengthening the knowledge, skills, and connections to keep children healthy and safe and prepare them for life and work.
