The family spirit of Chilton Primary in Ramsgate was celebrated as the school marked its golden anniversary.

More than 200 guests including former staff members, pupils and parents gathered to mark 50 years since the doors first opened in the Chilton Lane complex in September 1975.

The nostalgic get together saw many memories of yesteryear being shared and visitors toured the school and explored the classrooms where they had taught or spent their formative years in lessons.

Many remarked that while Chilton had progressed noticeably in appearance and resources, it retains the community heart that has made it so popular over half a century.

Tasty celebration treats included a familiar favourite of school puddings plus a birthday cake, tea and coffee.

Current Head of School Alex McAuley gave a short speech about the history of Chilton and thanked everyone for joining in the landmark celebration.

Among the special guests were teachers Mr Troupe and Mrs Jarvis (formally Miss Card) who both taught at Chilton from the beginning, and the Mayor of Ramsgate Cllr Laurie Hudson who attended with her granddaughter who is a current pupil.

Displays showed a range of memorabilia such as old photos and registers, while a time capsule created by today’s children detailed what life is like at Chilton in 2025, from their favourite playground games to the toys they enjoy playing with. The capsule will be buried in the grounds by the pupils’ junior leadership team.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “It was a fitting community celebration of 50 years of playing a pivotal part in the lives of so many.

“It was a nostalgic evening for us all - it was very clear to see how dear Chilton school is held in the hearts of so many people.”

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
