One Childhood, One Chance

Learning From Family History

All our yesterdays came face to face with today’s children at Chilton primary in Ramsgate as they explored the area’s culture and heritage.

As part of a wide-ranging topic, parents and grandparents were invited to bring memorabilia from their past in to school.

Articles from yesteryear included old camera and telephones and pictures showing life from many decades ago, cuddly toys, games and LP records and their sleeves.

It gave today’s Year 1 group a snapshot into a world that they are investigating as part of the My Home, My Town topic.

It reinforced the learning that living memory means within their grandparents’ lifetime and helps them understand their own family history.

The history element looks at how their community area has changed while the geography part saw youngsters walk around their area including a visit to the park.

They identified physical and human features within the local area and will use these to create a map.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “We were overjoyed with the number of families that came in to join us and the wealth of knowledge they gave the children.

“My Home, My Town encompasses both History and Geography learning goals. We believe in giving children first-hand experiences in order to create memorable learning.”

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
