One Childhood, One Chance

Prehistory Rocks at Chilton Primary

Life in the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age is being compared and contrasted by in a broad-based learning adventure for children at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

To find out more about the importance of fossils and the secrets they reveal, an expert from Monkton Nature Reserve visited the Year 3 group.

He brought along a range of fossils for pupils to examine and he passionately discussed the importance of using them to understand the past.

To back up their knowledge, children visited nearby Pegwell Bay to become real life fossil hunters, even having a go at flint knapping as well.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “In order to make learning even more memorable, it is vital that the children have these hands-on experiences both in and out of the classroom.

“It underpins the knowledge they are already learning and offers a wider perspective and a more thorough examination of their topic work.”

The thematic curriculum Prehistory Rocks covers many aspects of the subject period across a range of subjects.

For example, in English children are enjoying texts such as How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth and The Stone Age Boy, while also writing play scripts including stage directions; in Science they are learning to name and compare different types of rocks and learn how fossils are formed.

The children are also exploring what constitutes ‘prehistory’ and how life developed and society changed through the ages, including knowledge of weapons, protection, farming and settlements.

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
