One Childhood, One Chance

Festival of Caring at Chilton

Harvest vegetables took main roles in an unusual performance of a short drama in the style of Romeo and Juliet at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

As part of the school’s annual harvest festival celebrations pupils from Years 5 and 6 presented their version inspired by the Shakespeare classic – with the feuding Montague and Capulet families replaced by carrots and potatoes.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “It was certainly very different and was an eye-catching highlight of our festival.

“It showed the creative side of our pupils and it contrasted strongly alongside the traditional celebrations that we enjoyed.”

The 2025 harvest of kindness and caring produced a mini mountain of foodstuff for Thanet Food Link as pupils, families and staff donated an array of packets and tins that will be donated to the area’s needy.

Mrs Cheshire added: “Our assemblies for different years groups and families were uplifting events for our school community. Chilton is always keen to support charities and worthwhile causes, and we are happy to help out those who need food.

“At our assemblies we sang harvest celebration songs and focussed on the need to help those less fortunate than ourselves. This ethos underpins one of the many core values our children learn throughout their school life with us.

“Once again we were overwhelmed with donations. It is a positive thing for our children to know that they can help make life a little brighter for some families and individuals who need support.”

The Thanet Food Link charity online states: “Anyone who finds themselves in need of food can attend one of our distribution points during the specified opening hours. Agencies who work directly with people in need including children’s centres, support agencies, schools, associations supporting disabled people, community centres and NHS health trainers may also send people to us.

“After registering, we provide them and those in their household with a minimum of three days emergency food.”
