World Book Day Is A Big Laugh at Chilton

Books that make us laugh was the jolly theme for World Book Day at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

Every year group had a specific book to focus their activities around for the day with a brilliant selection of funny tales.

They were Year R - Poo at the Zoo – The Great Poo Mystery; Year 1 - The Full Stop That Got Away; Year 2 - The Disgusting Sandwich; Year 3 – If You Laugh I’m Starting This Book Over Again; Year 4 – Did You Take The B From My Ook; Year 5 - Please Don’t Turn The Page; and Year 6 – The Day The Crayons Quit.

Every class also took part in reading for pleasure sessions (these also happen weekly at Chilton) that were linked to the costumed characters the children were portraying.

Teachers performed a lively story in a whole-class assembly based on the funny book Aliens Love Underpants with all staff dressed as characters.

Teachers also swapped classes to read funny books to the children; and they also took part in a Secret Reader film where they read to pupils in disguise.

There was also a competition set for home where the children were challenged to read as many books as they could in a funny or unusual place.

Chilton Book Fayre is held daily next week where children can use their World Book Day voucher to select more stories.

Year 6 teacher Helen Rowland-Hill is the school’s English Lead and Key Stage 2 lead. She said: “What an amazing event. World Book Day at Chilton is always a fun and enjoyable day for children and staff.

“Reading is incredibly important for our children and we enjoy planning fun and engaging activities for them to experience.”

Head of School Alex McAuley highlighted the creativity at the heart of range of activities that engaged children throughout.

He said: “Our children love World Book Day and we work hard to ensure they obtain maximum fun and broaden their knowledge through exploring the written and spoken word with experiences that reinforce our ongoing literacy learning.

“And once again the sheer imagination and attention to detail in the outfits the children and staff wore to school was so impressive.”

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors in Broadstairs and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
