Historic Ramsgate Explored by Chilton Primary Pupils
The changing face of Ramsgate is being explored by children at Chilton Primary in the town.
The Year 5 group extended their research from the classroom with a visit to the historic harbour and the Western Undercliff.
They walked from the Chilton site to the harbour and Pegwell beach, learning about Ramsgate’s role in both World Wars through historical monuments.
At Pegwell they studied sea defences like groynes, rock armour and sea walls, and learned about erosion and deposition.
They also used microscopes to examine sand closely and were amazed by the experience on a trip they voted their best so far.
The exploration of the town is central to the children’s Tides of Change topic which delves deeply into the history, heritage and culture of the area.
They are exploring how the town has changed and are studying its historical importance and key events.
These include how it became an important port during the medieval period and played a role in the English Civil War in the 17th century; how it experienced significant growth and development in the 19th century as a popular seaside resort, attracting visitors from London and beyond.
Other key highlights are that Ramsgate played a significant role in World War 2 as a key embarkation point for the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940, with many troops being evacuated from its harbour; and that the town features several notable landmarks, including the harbour that was designed by the famous engineer John Rennie.
Pupils are also investigating the role of the Ramsgate Tunnels, an extensive underground network of passages and air raid shelters that were used during World War 2 to protect residents during air raids.
Another important learning note for the group is that Ramsgate Maritime Museum showcases the town's maritime heritage, including exhibits on its fishing industry, shipbuilding, and maritime trade.
Deputy head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “There is a treasure trove of important historical and social information in and around the harbour and Pegwell where our Year 5 team visited.
“It helped elaborate on their ongoing classroom learning and gave pupils are far deeper insight into the area, its community and how it has developed and changed over time.”
Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors in Broadstairs and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
