One Childhood, One Chance

Exploring Prehistoric Pegwell’s Treasures

The Pegwell Bay coast became an outdoor classroom for Chilton Primary children who became junior scientific explorers and archaeologists for the day.

Equipped with magnifying glasses, binoculars and other scientific tools, the Year 3 group was challenged to investigate the natural environment and identify different types of rocks, including sedimentary rocks, while learning about how they were formed over millions of years.

One of the highlights was taking part in flintknapping – the ancient skill of shaping flint to create tools and weapons, just as prehistoric people would have done thousands of years ago.

The hands-on experience gave the children a fascinating insight into life in ancient Britain and helped them make meaningful connections between their classroom their classroom Prehistory Rocks themed learning topic and the real world.

Throughout the visit, the children impressed staff with their curiosity, teamwork and enthusiasm as they tackled each scientific challenge. They confidently used scientific vocabulary to describe their observations, demonstrating just how much they had already learned during their topic.

Deputy Head Teacher Hannah Cheshire said: “The importance of a visit like this is that it underpins the knowledge pupils are already learning and offers a wider perspective and a more thorough examination of their topic work

“It was wonderful to see them putting their classroom learning into practice in such an inspiring environment.

“I was astounded by the level of scientific vocabulary they were using throughout the day and the confidence they showed when investigating the rocks and discussing their findings.

“Experiences like this really bring learning to life and help children develop a genuine curiosity about the world around them."

The visit to Pegwell Bay was a memorable experience for Team Sapphire and Team Cornflower classes, providing the perfect opportunity to deepen their understanding of prehistoric Britain, geology and scientific enquiry.

By exploring, questioning and investigating in a real-life setting, the children returned to school with a wealth of new knowledge, unforgettable memories and an even greater enthusiasm for science and history.
