One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 03.05.24

What a fantastic week Year 3 have had. From our Year assembly to writing beautiful character descriptions, they have worked so hard and we are so proud of them! Let's show you what we have been up to!

English

In English this week, we have been continuing our class text of Charlotte's Web, focussing on writing character descriptions of the characters. We started off by looking at using expanded noun phrases (adjective, adjective noun) to describe Templeton as a sneaky, cunning creature. We then moved on to focus our attention on Charlotte. We began by making spider models and writing descriptive language around this before writing our character description focussing on how Charlotte moves using verbs and adverbs.

Next week, we will be moving on to start our non-chronological reports

Maths

Our Maths learning this week has seen us multiplying and dividing in different contexts. We began the week by looking at rounding in different contexts e.g. Year 1 are going on a school trip and need to catch the coach. Each coach can fit 25 people and the total amount of children and adults going is 84. How many coaches are needed?

To solve this calculation we need to find out how many 25's go into 84. I know that 25 x 3 = 75 but I can't leave 14 people stranded so I will need another coach in order for those people to go so I will round up to 4 coaches.

We then moved on to division and looked at sharing amounts equally between groups and sharing amounts using our knowledge of fractions (e.g. 4 cakes shared between 8 children). The children were excellent with this and really picked up the concept quickly. We finished our learning by investigating measuring and scaling problems where we had word problems that involved making amounts bigger (e.g. a toy is 4cm long, a dog toy is 3 times longer. How long is the dog toy?).

Next week, we will be moving on to look at fractions with adding and subtracting like fractions (fractions with the same denominator)

Thematic curriculum

Our afternoon learning this week, began with our PSHE. We learnt that at the end of the term we will be taking part in a Be here, Be You, Belong parade and reminded ourselves about what this meant. We then spent the afternoon making hats for our parade with different hearts representing why we loved ourselves, why we loved others and why we are unique.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we were learning all about Mayan writing and Mayan maths. We learnt that the Mayans used hieroglyphics made up of glyphs to write. We were able to practise some of these, focussing on syllobograms which are glyphs (symbols) that represent words. In the following lesson, we learnt about the Mayan number system and how they wrote them. We practised writing some out before solving some Mayan math problems!

Our afternoon learning this week was finished with our art learning. We learnt how to make a colour wash using a gradient. We were expert painters and were able to use amazing artistic vocabulary!

Next week, we will be learning about the Mayans move North, why their civilisation fell and continuing to develop our art skills by using different brushes to create shapes, textures, patterns and lines.

Home Learning

Please choose one of the following activities to complete for home learning this week:

1. Write a character description about someone who lives in your home. Use expanded noun phrases (adjective, adjective noun) and verbs (doing words) and adverbs (describe the doing words) to describe them.

2. Make a fact file about spiders, write as much information as you can

3. Look into what a non-chronological report is and make a steps to success (what we must include) criteria for a non-chronological report

Olympian Visit

We are incredibly excited to announce that on the 6th of June we have Olympic gymnast Danny Crouch visiting Chilton, to deliver a class assembly with a Q & A session and a short fitness session. Every child has received a sponsorship form this week to complete and fill in to try and raise as much money as possible for Danny to help him with his career. There will be prizes for the most amount raised! If you would like any extra information about Danny, his crowdfunding page is linked below.
