Weekly News! 25.4.25

Welcome back to Term 5! We have hit the ground running. Here is what we have been up to this week...
English
This week in English, we have started a brand new text ‘Emily Brown and the thing’ by Cressida Cowell. We started off the week using adjectives to improve our writing. We had to think of some wonderful ideas about the appearance of characters and their personalities. We moved our learning on by looking at verbs and adverbs. We even acted these out to the class. We ended the week by using our skills to create a lost poster, on the search for Emily Brown. This really showcased what we have learnt this week.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
This week we we have been exploring the concept of number lines, specifically looking at intervals and working out missing numbers. This has provided the children with a practical approach to understanding how numbers relate to each other on a number line, which is a fundamental skill in their mathematical development.
Following this, we introduced rounding numbers to the nearest ten. This skill is not only important for more complex calculations in the future but is also a valuable life skill that helps with estimation. The children have been engaged in various activities to practice this, including interactive games and group discussions.
Next week we will be looking at position and direction!
PSHE and Thematic
This week has been quite exciting in our classroom as we embarked on our 'Be Here, Be You, Belong' learning journey. Our focus has been on embracing acceptance and celebrating the uniqueness of every individual. The children have shown wonderful enthusiasm in discussions around how we can appreciate one another’s differences, and it has been heartwarming to witness the friendships blossoming as a result.
Following this, we transitioned into our thematic learning with a new topic that has intrigued the students: 'Passion for Fashion'. We began with an engaging exploration of various materials and their properties in a scientific context. The children participated in activities that allowed them to investigate how solid objects can possess multiple characteristics, sparking their curiosity and encouraging them to think critically. I encourage you to ask your child about their favourite material and the properties they discovered—this could lead to some fascinating conversations!
