One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 2.5.25

This week we welcome the warmer weather and the excitement of summer fast approaching! We want to share just how impressed we are with Year 2’s continued enthusiasm and engagement in their learning. Their engagement truly brings so much joy to our classroom environment! Let's have a look at some of their amazing achievements this week.

English

We’ve been diving into the story 'Emily Brown and the Thing', and the children have really enjoyed it! It’s been a great way for them to work on writing in the past tense and using the first-person perspective.

We are thrilled to say that they’ve been doing an amazing job with it! The children have written some delightful diary entries that show off their understanding of the characters’ feelings and experiences. They’ve also challenged themselves by exploring different viewpoints, which is so important for developing empathy.

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In maths this week we have been focused on the topic of position and direction.

We started our week by exploring positional language, which has been a great way for the children to describe where things are. They really enjoyed the caracal of activities and seemed to have a blast learning these concepts!

Next, we jumped into using our left and right, as well as understanding clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. The children paired up and directed each other around the playground, noting down their directions along the way. It was wonderful to see them so engaged and using their communication skills.

Thematic

This week in our thematic lessons, we have continued to delve into the fascinating world of materials and their various properties. The children have been investigating different materials to determine their suitability for specific purposes. Interestingly, we discovered that wood would not make for an effective apron!

As we move forward with our topic, "Passion for Fashion," we have also begun to put our sewing skills to the test! The children have been learning the essential techniques of joining fabrics together using a running stitch and an over stitch. The children truly showed  their hard work and resilience during this task; it has truly been wonderful to witness their determination and creativity come to life!

Love to Learn

This week, we have been writing diary entries based on characters. We would love you to write your very own diary entry. This may be written over the weekend or explaining your day at school. Don’t forget to include your feelings.

Be creative and have fun!
