Weekly News! 23.5.25

What a great week we have had in Year 2! Here is what we have been up to…
English
In our English lessons this week, we started the week by engaging in a fun activity that involved building wonderful sentences using the prompts who, what, where, when, how, and why. This not only sparked the children's creativity, but it also allowed them to incorporate adjectives, verbs, and adverbs into their writing. It has been wonderful to see how their understanding of sentence structure and descriptive language has blossomed.
Following this, we transitioned into writing our own narratives. The students were encouraged to vary their sentences and experiment with different styles, which has resulted in some truly imaginative stories. I am incredibly proud of their efforts and the progress they have made.
Looking ahead, I would like to inform you that next term we will be introducing a new text, "Grace and Family." This will provide the children with fresh opportunities to enhance their literacy skills and explore new themes
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
In maths this week, our focus has been on the engaging world of shapes, where we began our discussions with 3D shapes and their properties.
We kicked off the week by recapping the properties of various 3D shapes, including their vertices, corners, and faces. The children showed great enthusiasm as they explored these concepts. It's wonderful to see them making connections between the different shapes and their features.
Following our exploration of 3D shapes, we transitioned to recognising the 2D shapes that appear on the faces of these objects. This activity not only deepens their understanding but also allows them to appreciate the shapes found in their everyday surroundings. The children particularly enjoyed the sorting and comparing activities, where they identified and categorised common 3D shapes alongside familiar objects from their daily lives.
As always, your support at home is invaluable in reinforcing these concepts. A great way to continue this learning journey is to encourage your child to observe and identify shapes around the house or while out and about. Activities such as building with blocks, drawing objects, or even scavenger hunts for shapes can be both fun and educational.
RE
This week in our Religious Education classes, we have been exploring the fascinating topic of Christian rites of passage. The children have been engaged in discussions about what rites of passage are and how these significant events shape our lives.
We began by defining the concept of a rite of passage and its importance in various cultures. The class then focused on two prominent examples: marriage ceremonies and baptisms. The children had the opportunity to recognise and discuss the different symbols and elements associated with these events, such as rings, vows, water, and candles. It was heartwarming to see their enthusiasm and the thoughtful questions they posed during our discussions.
To further enrich their understanding, I encourage you to have a conversation with your child about any rites of passage they may have experienced or witnessed in your lives. This could include weddings, baptisms, or even personal milestones such as birthdays or graduations. Sharing these experiences can provide valuable insights and help reinforce what they have learned in class.
Love to Learn
During half term, we would love for you to research Gambia. This can be displayed any way you wish and will link in with our English text next term. You may want to create a poster or leaflet!
