We have enjoyed another lovely week in Year 2, and we can't wait to share our super learning with you. The warm weather has been a wonderful addition to our outdoor activities, and the children have thoroughly embraced it, showing great enthusiasm and adaptability.
English
We are excited to share that Year 2 have dived into a fantastic new story: The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. The children are absolutely loving all the adventures in this magical tale and are right on the edge of their seats, eager for more!
We've really got into the story, thinking about the different characters and themes. The children have even come up with their own questions for the author, which has been great for sparking their creativity!
This story has been a wonderful way to fire up our imaginations. The children have crafted some amazing character descriptions, packed with brilliant adjectives. We’re focusing on action too, using lots of verbs and adverbs to make our writing pop. Plus, we’ve been adding conjunctions so that their sentences are full of detail!
As your children continue to explore this enchanting world, I encourage you to chat with them about the story at home. Discussing characters, themes, and what they think might happen next can really enrich their experience—and it can lead to some fun conversations!
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
We’ve been diving into fractions, and we are really pleased to say that the children are getting the hang of both fractions of shapes and amounts. They’ve been coming up with some creative ways to represent these ideas, making our lessons fun and interactive. Lately, we’ve been counting in halves, quarters, and thirds, and I’m excited to share that many of the children can even write mixed fractions that show a whole number and a bit extra!
As we wrapped up our fractions work, we moved on to statistics. The children revisited tally charts and have been busy collecting their own data to create bar charts. It’s great to see them using maths in real-life situations!
If you’d like to support their learning at home, try chatting about fractions during cooking or sharing snacks—it really helps them see how it all works in the real world.
Thematic
Over the past few weeks, we have been immersed in our Thematic lessons and have harnessed the knowledge gained from our recent trip to Wildwood, which has greatly enriched our understanding of the subject.
In our lessons, we have explored the essential components that a habitat must provide for a living organism to thrive. We focused on four key requirements: food, water, shelter, and space. Through various activities, the children have had the opportunity to investigate different types of habitats and the myriad of creatures that call them home.
Additionally, our discussions have led us to micro-habitats, which are smaller, specialised environments that play a crucial role in our ecosystem. The students have learned how these micro-habitats are often more adaptable and suitable for the smaller creatures that inhabit them. This understanding has fostered a greater appreciation for the diversity of life in our natural surroundings, as well as the importance of preserving these ecosystems.
Love to Learn
As we look forward to Year 3, we would like to make the transitional period as smooth as possible for the children. This week we think it would be really helpful if the children leant their TTRS and AR logins off by heart!
Maybe try a quiz every day or just log in for some timetables practice.
