Weekly News! 4.7.25

We have enjoyed another lovely week in Year 2, and we can't wait to share our super learning with you. The warm sunshine has made its mark on our days, and the children have been soaking it up with smiles and energy during our outdoor sessions. It’s been a week full of creativity, expression, and hands-on learning, just the way we like it!
With transition coming soon we have included the videos from the children’s new teachers!
English
This week in English, we’ve been diving deeper into The Magic Finger and focusing on sequencing the story. The children have worked hard to retell the tale in the correct chronological order, using time-related sentence openers like First, Next, Then, and Finally. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence growing as they use punctuation accurately and organise their thoughts clearly.
One of the highlights of the week was our Reader’s Theatre! The children took on different roles and read aloud with expression, working together to bring the story to life. This not only improved their reading fluency but also helped them understand the characters’ emotions and actions more deeply. We were so impressed with their enthusiasm and teamwork!
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading. Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult. The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319 For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this! Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
This week, we’ve been exploring volume and capacity in our maths lessons and it’s been wonderfully practical! The children have been estimating, comparing, and measuring different amounts using a variety of containers. From pouring and filling to calculating how much more or less liquid one container holds compared to another, the children have really enjoyed these hands-on activities in the heat!
It’s been a perfect topic for the warmer weather, and a great opportunity to apply maths skills to real-life situations.
Thematic
As we conclude our Thematic learning this term, the children have celebrated everything they’ve learned about habitats and micro-habitats in a really special way. They created their very own habitat maps, complete with keys, and presented them proudly to the class.
It was a wonderful celebration of their learning—each child shared what they had included and why, using the knowledge they’ve built up over the last few weeks. We were blown away by their creativity, attention to detail, and the confidence they showed when speaking in front of their peers.
Next up in Thematic, we’ll be moving into the exciting world of Computing, where we’ll begin to explore coding and digital literacy, so stay tuned!
Love to Learn
Next Wednesday we are creating an art piece inspired on helping the environment. Could the children collect clean rubbish to add to our collage – green or blue to create the world.
