Weekly News! 25/04/25

Welcome back to term 5. We hope you have had a well-rested Easter break. Thank you to everyone who made it to our come dine with me picnic. We hope you enjoyed it too. We would also like to say a massive thank you to you for your efforts and your growing love to learn task. We look forward to continuing to grow them in school.
RWI
We are currently focusing on recapping Set 1 and Set 2 sounds. This is a crucial stage in your child’s phonics journey, as it provides them with the foundation needed for successful reading and writing. We encourage all children to engage actively during our sessions, as exploring these sounds in various contexts helps to reinforce their understanding.
To further support your child’s learning at home, we suggest setting aside some time each day to practice reading words with these sounds. Encouraging your child to identify sounds within words will not only boost their confidence but also enhance their reading skills.
Maths
In our maths lessons we have focused on sharing and exploring odd and even numbers. We have been having a fantastic time learning about how numbers can be divided fairly amongst groups.
During our sessions, we discovered an important concept: sharing odd numbers fairly between two people isn’t possible! This led to some engaging discussions and activities as we practised sharing numbers. The children enjoyed experimenting with physical objects, such as blocks and counters, to see how the numbers could be divided. It was wonderful to watch them grasp the idea that even numbers can be shared equally, while odd numbers can leave one person with an extra piece.
To make our learning even more fun, we introduced a catchy song about odd and even numbers! The children have been singing it enthusiastically, helping them remember the difference between the two types of numbers. If you hear them singing at home, do feel free to join in!
In order to reinforce these concepts, I encourage you to engage your child in discussions about odd and even numbers during daily activities. For example, you could look at the number of apples in a bowl or the number of toys they have, and ask your child whether those numbers are odd or even. This informal practice at home can greatly enhance their understanding and retention of these foundational maths skills.
Next week we will be learning about double numbers.
Thematic
This week, we spent a day learning about our new season spring. During our explorations, we’ve discovered some fascinating facts about spring. Firstly, we learnt that flowers begin to bloom during this season, filling our world with vibrant colours and sweet scents. Secondly, spring is a time when many baby animals are born, from fluffy lambs to chirpy chicks, making it a joyful experience for everyone. Lastly, we talked about how the weather can be quite unpredictable; one moment it might be sunny, and the next, it could surprise us with a rain shower!
As part of our spring theme, the children enjoyed learning about some common spring flowers. They utilised their observational drawing skills to carefully sketch these lovely blooms, each perspective capturing the unique features of the flowers. Following this, the children wrote about the various things they observe in spring, honing their writing skills whilst expressing their creativity.
To further immerse ourselves in the spring spirit, we listened to some spring poems. This inspired us to collectively craft a class acrostic poem, which beautifully highlights the wonders of spring.
Next week we will be exploring the life cycles of humans and frogs.
