One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 19.9.25

We have had another great week in Reception this week. The children continue to impress us with their excellent behaviours for learning and their turn taking and sharing at Power Play times. Well done everyone!

RWI

This week, we have continued to learn more Set 1 sounds. We have learned ‘s’, ‘d’, ‘t’, ‘i’ and ‘n’. Each of these sounds have a patter to help children how to write these sounds. These can be found in your child’s pink sounds book. We kindly ask that you spend a little bit of time each day going through the sounds book with your child to help them to say the sound, draw pictures of words starting with that sound or practising writing the sound using the patter (e.g. round the apple and down the leaf for ‘a’).

During our RWI sessions we have also been learning to orally blend. This is where we say the sounds in the word (e.g. d-o-g) and the children put the sounds together to say the whole word (dog). Any help with this at home will be great! For example, you could ask your child to get their ‘c-oa-t’ or go and brush their ‘t-ee-th’.

Maths

This week in maths we have been learning to count actions e.g. claps, stomps of the feet, bunny hops. We learned to say the numbers in order and that the last number we said was the amount. We did this throughout the week in lots of fun and exciting ways. You could reinforce this at home e.g. when walking up stairs.

Next week we will be focusing on the numbers 1-5. We will look at a number a day and look at the different ways it can be represented (e.g. on our fingers, the numeral, the numicon piece which matches that number).

Thematic

This week we have been learning about being a good learning partner. To start the week, we shared our summer/love to learn books with our learning partner. We learned to take it in turns to share and speak. It was so lovely to see the children sharing these! We then spoke about our family and how families can be similar or different. We also created our own family tree! Towards the end of the week, we developed our speaking skills by talking in full sentences to say what we like and dislike, including reasons why.

Next week we will be focusing on self portraits. To start the week, we will look at artists self portraits and discuss the features we can see. We will then draw our own and then use colour mixing with paints to add colour.

Here are some photos of us this week at school!

Dress to Express Day:

Our first mini topic is called ‘Marvellous Me’. Over the next few weeks we will be learning about what makes us all special. To end this learning, we would like the children to come into school on Friday 26th September dressed in clothes that expresses what they like or shows us something about them (e.g. wearing a football shirt if they like football, wearing an apron if they like cooking etc). Please do not buy anything for this, use what you have at home already! Please make sure that children are wearing trainers as this will be our first PE day!

Autumn bags

On Monday, your child bring home a white bag with an autumn poem on it. Please could you pop any autumn related objects in the bag and return to school on Friday 3rd October. We will use these items in school for lots of different activities.

Important Messages:

  • Forest school sessions will start next week. Please could all children have a pair of named wellies in school so that these can be worn for these sessions. Many thanks!

  • Our first PE session will be on Friday 26th September. This is also Dress to Express day so please ensure children are wearing trainers on this day. Children will then be required to wear their PE kit in to school each Friday from 3rd October.

  • Please could all children have a named water bottle in school everyday.

  • Please ensure that all clothes are named.

  • Children are allowed to bring in a pair of (named) wellies. These can be left under their peg.

  • Children will have brought a book home from the book corner. These are to be shared at home. You can return these as often as you like and replace with a new book to be shared at home.

  • Some parents have returned items belonging to the school (e.g. resources, superstar learner cards). If you find that your child has accidentally brought something home from school, please could you return it to school.

  • A reminder that children are not allowed to bring things into school to play with. We do not want things from home to get lost or broken! Many thanks for your support with this.
