One Childhood, One Chance

RWI pure sounds

At Chilton we use the Read, Write Inc programme to support children learn their sounds. To support this at home, we are sharing a short video which demonstrates how to pronounce each sound clearly.

Learning pure sounds (for example, saying “mmm” rather than “muh”) is very important. It helps children blend sounds smoothly when they start reading words, without adding extra sounds.

We have not learnt all the sounds in the video yet. Please see the blog each week to see where we are up to.

The following video has the pure sounds in the order in which we learn them.

As we introduce a new sound, we also use cued articulation. This gives each sound a visual clue linking movement and sound. If you would like to see the gestures for the sounds, we recommend you google cued articulation and use the Jane Passy videos.

We hope this helps. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
