We have had a great week in reception with our first school trip. The children were impeccably behaved and made the school proud. The children loved their journey to the harbour, discussing the different types of transport (luckily for us our bus behaved!)

We have been continuing our small group learning, focusing on addressing any gaps in Set 1 sounds. Some groups are now ready to move on to learning their Set 2 sounds.
Set 2 sounds are known as “special friends,” which consist of two or more letters that combine to create one sound. It is crucial for children to recognise these special friends when reading, as this recognition significantly enhances their reading skills.
We encourage you to support your child’s reading by engaging with the texts they bring home. This practice will reinforce their learning and help them become more confident readers. Additionally, some children may have received a sticker indicating any Set 1 sound gaps they still need to work on.

This week, we have been exploring the fascinating world of shapes. We began with a thorough investigation of 2D shapes, which are flat and can be found all around us. The children not only learned the names of these shapes but also described their characteristics, such as the number of sides and corners.
As we progressed, the children demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and understanding. They were able to sort the shapes based on their properties, distinguishing between those that have corners and those that do not, those with curved or straight sides and those with differing numbers of sides. To wrap up the week, we transitioned to 3D shapes, which are the ones we can pick up and hold, further expanding their understanding of geometry.

Next week we will be learning about length and height.

At the beginning of the week we explored vehicles from the past and compared them to what we have now. We learnt about penny farthings, steam trains and the first buses and aeroplanes. We had to sort pictures into vehicles from the past and present. We then received a letter from the police! They were asking for our help to catch the naughty bus. To do this, we decided to make a wanted poster. We wrote what the bus looks like so people can keep an eye out for them.
Mid-week we went on our first school trip! We had so much fun, whilst also ensuring we were keeping safe. Please see the photos of our time spotting different vehicles and drawing pictures of the boats in the harbour.
After returning to school, we thought about all the things we saw on our way to the harbour out of the bus windows. Then we created a map of where we had been from a bird’s eye view in case anyone needs to get to the harbour.
