We have had another wonderful week of learning and play!
Assembly
Many thanks to those adults who were able to come along and watch the assembly on Thursday. We were so proud of the children who spoke and sang so beautifully in the assembly! Well done all! Thanks for your help in learning the lines at home too.
Show and tell
We have had an increase in children bringing in toys, keyrings etc for show and tell. We do not want these things to get lost or broken at school so kindly ask that show and tell is related to our topic (currently dinosaurs), is something from a very special celebration or things that children have won e.g. trophies or medals. We have explained this to our class, but your support with this would be much appreciated. We are also always happy to receive emails with photos of special events that children can show to the class.
RWI
It has been wonderful to see how engaged and enthusiastic the children are about their learning! The end goal for our Reception class is to help them become speedy readers, and we are making fantastic progress. A key aspect of this journey involves the strategy of ‘Fred Talking’. This technique allows children to sound out unfamiliar words, breaking them down into smaller, manageable parts.
As children become more confident and start recognising words, we encourage them to transition to 'Fred in your head', which is a silent way of using Fred Talking in their minds. This stage acts as a bridge to achieving fluent reading, enabling them to read more swiftly and with greater comprehension.
We kindly ask for your continued support at home by encouraging your child to read daily. Sharing stories or playing with words at home not only reinforces what they learn in school but also fosters a love of reading that will benefit them throughout their education.
Maths
This week, we have been learning to add. We have been learning that to add we combine two amounts together. We have been practising writing the calculation e.g. 6+3 = 9. We have been doing this in different ways e.g. selecting 2 pieces of Numicon and rolling the dice to create our calculations.

Next week we will be subtracting. Again, we will be doing this in different ways e.g. using jottings. We will also be practising writing our numerals correctly, including the ‘teen’ numbers.
Thematic
We started the week by reading: Say hello to dinosaurs! This is a lovely story that tells us some information about some of the dinosaurs. We used this information to create a class fact file of the different dinosaurs. We then used this to help us write about the dinosaurs. Towards the end of the week, we practised and then performed a song about dinosaurs to the class! In forest school this week, we pretended to be palaeontologists to find dinosaur bones (twigs) using brushes and then created a dinosaur skeleton. These were amazing!
Next week, we will be learning about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and will be sorting the dinosaurs into these groups. We will also find out where dinosaurs lived and then create our very own dinosaur; thinking about where it will love, what it will eat and what it will look like. We will also give it a name!
