What a fantastic week in Year 1! Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊
Maths
This week in maths we have been learning subtraction!
On Monday and Tuesday, we used cubes to help us break numbers into parts, and help us subtract. We looked carefully at the calculation, counting out how many cubes we need, then we broke away the amount we needed to subtract to give us an answer. On Wednesday, we have been subtracting by using our number bonds and part-part-whole models. We had to use the part-part-whole models correctly with the Numicon tiles and then as a challenge we had to write a subtraction calculation to match it. This was tricky but we were so fabulous at this!
Today, we have been learning how to develop our problem-solving skill of reasoning. We started off the lesson by looking at what happens when we subtract 0 to a number. We then worked with our partners to use resources to find the answers to calculations when we subtract 1. We then had to work together to explain what is happening using our reasoning sentence starters to help us.
Next week in maths the children will be continuing their subtraction skills.
Our Fact of the week this week is 4 + 1 = 5 and 1 + 4 = 5
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. We have met our new RWI teachers. We have been reviewing our sounds and working so hard phonetically reading words. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Our reading for pleasure book this week was Tiddler by Julia Donaldson. This week we looked at sand and sea creatures, came up with our own actions for the story, retold the story with out story map and we even came up with our own versions of why Tiddler was late. Next week our story will be The Smartest Giant in Town.
Reading
Today the children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly. Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home.
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Home Learning
For this week’s learning we would like the children to create their own harvest picture. You can show case this any way you wish.
Please can Love 2 Learn books be returned each Wednesday.
Thematic
This week we have been geographers! Thi week we spoke about how most of us live in Ramsgate and how Ramsgate is a town, as opposed to a village or city. We discussed the main differences between these, using photos from Minster, Ramsgate and Canterbury, before working in groups to sort photos into the three categories. Then we practiced writing our Chilton address on envelopes.
Next week we will be continuing being geographer and will look at a variety of different maps and compare them.
