What a fantastic week we have had in Year 1! Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊
Maths
This week in maths we have been looking at identifying odd and even numbers. First, we used the Numicon tiles to look at which had a partner and which didn’t to identify odd and even numbers. We then chose a number and counted out the socks, if they made a pair that number would be even, if they didn’t it would be odd. Today, we consolidated our learning about odd and even numbers through a problem-solving lesson. We had to work systematically to find all the possible odd and even numbers up to 20 and beyond. We thought about how we could do this logically so that we did not repeat ourselves and so that we found all of the possibilities.
Next week in maths we will be looking at money up to 50p!
Fact of the week
Each week we will have a fact of the week. We will learn the addition fact(s) and the related subtraction fact(s). This week we are looking at doubling the number three!
3 + 3 = 6
Read, Write Inc.
The children have shown wonderful enthusiasm as we’ve been revisiting our sounds and practising phonetic reading. One of our exciting focusses this week has been spotting our “special friends” in words. This brilliant strategy helps children break words into manageable chunks, making reading both easier and more enjoyable.
You can really support your child at home by practising this together. Have fun exploring words, finding those special friends, saying the sounds, and reading the words aloud. Your involvement makes such a difference and helps to strengthen everything we do in class!
Alongside our phonics work, we’ve also been improving our handwriting skills. The children are learning when to use capital letters at the start of sentences and how to finish with full stops correctly. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence and progress growing in both areas!
Reading
Every week the children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves, first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please encourage children to place their reading folders in the trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly. Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Home Learning
Thank you for your wonderful learning, we can see you have worked so hard.
Part of our thematic learning this term is to learn about the 4 countries which make up the UK. Please can we ask you to make/buy a dish (if you are able) from the countries listed below and bring the dish in on Thursday 27th November.
We must ask that no foods contain nuts. For allergy reasons, we also ask that food which has been brought comes in to school in the original packaging and any homemade food has a list of ALL ingredients. We really do appreciate your help and support with this!
This week for Love to Learn, we would like you to buy/make the foods associated with the countries as follows:
Red Romans - England
Yellow Saxons - Northern Ireland
Green Normans - Scotland
Blue Vikings - Wales
PSHE
This week we have had healthy relationships week. We have
explored our feelings and talked about what makes a good friend. We looked at pictures of children feeling left out and discussed how we could help them feel happy again. We made our own Friendship Flowers to show the different ways we can be kind to our friends.
We talked about what kindness means and how we can be kind to ourselves as well as to others. We played the “Who Am I?” game and made colourful “Kind to Me” posters to remind us to look after our minds and bodies. We also tried some calming breathing techniques in our Zen Den. On Thursday we learnt about bullying and how it is different from just falling out with a friend. We talked about what we can do if we see someone being unkind. We acted out role-plays to practise using our “Power for Good” to help others and reminded ourselves that we are a Telling School.
Next week we will continue our thematic unit Thunderbolts and Lightning and we will be learning about the 4 countries that make up the United Kingdom.
